About The Position

The Department of Public Advocacy (DPA) is seeking a zealous advocate manager to lead the Boyd Trial Services Office, serving Boyd County. This role involves providing management and direction to a team of lawyer advocates, a criminal defense investigator, an alternative sentencing worker, and administrative staff. The Staff Attorney Supervisor will maintain a caseload while ensuring the office team effectively represents clients by filing motions, participating in plea negotiations, assisting clients with treatment and other needs, and preparing cases for trial. Leaders in DPA Trial Offices also contribute to departmental educational initiatives, stay updated on legal changes, engage in community outreach, and foster relationships with political and systemic stakeholders. The DPA seeks individuals with a demonstrated commitment to helping vulnerable populations, exceptional organizational skills, self-direction, and the ability to collaborate with a defense team. The role emphasizes the privilege of representing clients on behalf of the people of Kentucky.

Requirements

  • Must have four years experience as a licensed attorney in the practice of law.
  • Must be admitted to practice law and in good standing in the Commonwealth of Kentucky OR comply with Kentucky Supreme Court Rule (SCR) 2.111 (limited certification of admission to practice), SCR 2.112 (attorney participants in defender or legal services programs), SCR 2.117 (practice pending admission).
  • Must maintain any required licensure(s), certification(s), or other credentials for the length of employment in this job classification.
  • Exceptional organizational skills.
  • Self-directed.
  • Comfortable working with their defense team which includes other attorneys, investigators, alternative sentencing workers, and legal office administrative staff.

Responsibilities

  • Manages day-to-day operations of the trial office and supervision of staff.
  • Represents individuals charged with criminal offenses in misdemeanor, juvenile, and felony cases vigorously, effectively, ethically, and with integrity.
  • Provides management and direction to a team of lawyer advocates, a criminal defense investigator, an alternative sentencing worker, and administrative staff.
  • Maintains a caseload while ensuring the office team is filing motions on behalf of clients, participating in plea negotiations, assisting clients in seeking treatment and other assistance as appropriate, and preparing cases for trial.
  • Participates in departmental educational initiatives.
  • Stays current on all changes in the law.
  • Seeks outreach in the local community.
  • Maintains relationships with political and systemic stakeholders.
