Staff AI Solutions Engineer - Nuclear & Safety

Mirion Technologies•Meriden, CT

About The Position

Mirion's Nuclear & Safety business group is building a small, high-impact team of embedded AI Solutions Engineers to identify operational friction across manufacturing, quality, service, and back-office workflows and deliver measurable efficiency gains using applied AI. This is a hands-on, business-facing builder role rather than a research or central-platform position. The engineer works closely with business operators—including plant managers, quality engineers, field service leaders, and product managers—to identify high-value problems and design, build, deploy, and support solutions. The work spans computer vision, spectral and sensor-data analytics, software development, and agentic AI/LLM-based automation. The role owns solutions through the full lifecycle, from rapid prototyping and real-user pilots to production hardening and handoff or ongoing support. It also involves communicating results in business terms, defining and tracking operational KPIs, supporting adoption through change management and light training, and coordinating with the central AI/Digital team on architecture, security, data governance, and tooling. Solutions must be developed with appropriate rigor for a regulated nuclear environment, including quality assurance, validation, documentation, export controls, and cybersecurity. The position reports directly to the Chief AI and Digital Officer. In the first year, success means delivering at least two to three AI solutions into production with measurable operational impact, establishing a trusted relationship with business-unit leadership, and creating reusable patterns or a playbook that can be extended to other Nuclear & Safety units or peer engineers.

Requirements

  • At least 5 years of experience shipping production software or applied ML/AI systems used by real users.
  • Experience in software engineering and cloud-based application development and deployment.
  • Hands-on experience building agentic or LLM-based systems, including prompt design and retrieval-augmented approaches; examples include LangChain, LangGraph, AutoGen, or a comparable custom agent framework.
  • Strong software engineering skills, including Python, cloud platforms such as Azure, AWS, or GCP, and APIs.
  • Sufficient MLOps/DevOps fluency to deploy solutions to production and maintain them.
  • Demonstrated high agency and ability to identify, scope, and deliver projects with minimal direction.
  • Excellent communication skills with non-technical audiences, including the ability to explain model capabilities and limitations without jargon and build trust with operators.
  • Comfort with ambiguity and autonomy, including the ability to operate independently as the AI/software specialist in a business unit while collaborating with centralized peers.

Nice To Haves

  • Hands-on experience building computer vision solutions using tools such as OpenCV, PyTorch, or TensorFlow, including image classification, detection, or segmentation pipelines, or experience applying ML to spectra, waveforms, and sensor time-series data.
  • Experience with Azure or AWS, Databricks, and Claude/OpenAI integration via AWS Bedrock or Azure Foundry.
  • Experience in a regulated industry such as nuclear power, defense, medical devices, or industrial manufacturing under a formal quality system, such as ISO 9001, 10 CFR 50 Appendix B, or NQA-1.
  • Prior experience as an embedded, business-facing, or forward-deployed engineer, solutions engineer, or applied AI generalist rather than in a purely research-facing ML role.
  • Domain exposure to nuclear power plant instrumentation and controls, radiation detection and measurement, gamma spectroscopy, health physics, or radiation safety and monitoring workflows.

Responsibilities

  • Embed within the Nuclear & Safety business unit by attending staff meetings and observing production, field service, and quality teams.
  • Map manual, error-prone, or slow processes and translate business pain points into scoped AI solutions and business cases.
  • Design and deploy solutions for visual inspection, defect and anomaly detection, spectral and sensor-data analysis, and image-based quality verification.
  • Design and deploy agentic AI systems, LLM-based agents, workflow orchestration, and automation for manufacturing, service, quality, compliance documentation, and back-office workflows.
  • Own the solution lifecycle, including rapid prototyping, piloting with real users, production hardening, and handoff or ongoing support.
  • Communicate progress, trade-offs, and results in clear, non-technical business language and adapt solutions based on stakeholder feedback.
  • Define and track operational metrics such as cycle time, error rate, cost, and throughput; course-correct when results do not meet expectations.
  • Lead change management and provide light training to support adoption.
  • Partner with the Chief AI & Digital Officer and central AI/Digital team on architecture, security, data governance, and tooling standards, and contribute reusable patterns.
  • Apply appropriate rigor for a regulated nuclear environment, including quality assurance, validation, documentation, export controls, and cybersecurity, in partnership with Quality, Regulatory, and Compliance colleagues.
  • Deliver at least two to three production AI solutions tied to measurable KPIs during the first year, build a trusted relationship with business-unit leadership, and develop reusable playbooks or patterns.
