Staff AI Solutions Engineer - Nuclear & Safety

About The Position

Mirion Technologies is hiring a Staff AI Solutions Engineer embedded in its Nuclear & Safety business units. This is a hands-on applied AI role focused on identifying operational problems across manufacturing, quality, service, and back-office workflows and building solutions that deliver measurable efficiency gains. It is neither a research role nor a central-platform role; the engineer works closely with business operators and owns solution design and delivery, using approaches that include computer vision, spectral and sensor-data analytics, software development, and agentic AI/LLM-based automation. The role reports directly to the Chief AI and Digital Officer and works with the central AI/Digital team to align with enterprise architecture, security, data governance, and tooling standards. The engineer owns the solution lifecycle from rapid prototype through user pilot and production hardening, and supports adoption through clear communication, metrics, change management, and light training. Work in the nuclear-regulated environment requires appropriate quality assurance, validation, documentation, export-control, and cybersecurity rigor in partnership with Quality, Regulatory, and Compliance colleagues. Year-one success includes putting at least two to three AI-driven solutions into production with measurable operational KPIs, building trusted relationships with business-unit leaders, and creating reusable solution patterns for other Nuclear & Safety units or peer engineers.

Requirements

  • At least 5 years of experience shipping production software or applied ML/AI systems used by real users.
  • Experience in software engineering and cloud-based application development and deployment.
  • Hands-on experience building agentic or LLM-based systems, including prompt design and retrieval-augmented approaches.
  • Strong software engineering skills, including Python, cloud platforms such as Azure, AWS, or GCP, APIs, and sufficient MLOps/DevOps fluency to deploy and maintain production systems.
  • Demonstrated high agency, ideally including projects identified, scoped, and delivered with minimal direction.
  • Excellent communication skills with non-technical audiences, including the ability to explain model capabilities and limitations without jargon and build trust with operators.
  • Comfort with ambiguity and autonomy, including working independently as the AI/software specialist embedded in a business unit.

Nice To Haves

  • Hands-on experience building computer vision solutions using tools such as OpenCV, PyTorch, or TensorFlow, or machine learning solutions for spectra, waveforms, and sensor time-series data.
  • Experience with Azure or AWS, Databricks, and Claude/OpenAI integration through AWS Bedrock or Azure Foundry.
  • Experience in a regulated industry such as nuclear power, defense, medical devices, or industrial manufacturing under a formal quality system such as ISO 9001, 10 CFR 50 Appendix B, or NQA-1.
  • Prior experience as an embedded, business-facing, or forward-deployed engineer, solutions engineer, or applied AI generalist rather than in a purely research-facing ML role.
  • Exposure to nuclear power plant instrumentation and controls, radiation detection and measurement, gamma spectroscopy, health physics, or radiation safety and monitoring workflows.

Responsibilities

  • Embed within a Nuclear & Safety business unit, attend staff meetings, walk production floors, and shadow field service and quality teams to understand operational needs.
  • Map manual, error-prone, or slow processes that cost time and money.
  • Translate non-technical business problems into scoped AI solutions and build business cases for prioritizing them.
  • Design and deploy solutions for visual inspection, defect and anomaly detection, spectral and sensor-data analysis, and image-based quality verification.
  • Design and deploy agentic AI systems, including LLM-based agents, workflow orchestration, and automation for manufacturing, service, quality, compliance documentation, and back-office work.
  • Own the full solution lifecycle, from rapid prototyping and real-user pilots through production hardening, handoff, or ongoing support.
  • Present progress, trade-offs, and results in plain business language, and adapt solutions based on stakeholder feedback.
  • Define and track operational metrics such as cycle time, error rate, cost, and throughput, and course-correct when results fall short.
  • Lead change management and provide light training to support adoption.
  • Partner with the Chief AI & Digital Officer and central AI/Digital team on architecture, security, data governance, and tooling standards, and contribute reusable patterns.
  • Apply appropriate rigor for a regulated nuclear environment, including quality assurance, validation, documentation, export controls, and cybersecurity, in partnership with Quality, Regulatory, and Compliance colleagues.
