About The Position

The Staff Accountant I supports the financial operations for Mary Washington Healthcare (MWHC), which includes hospitals, physician practices, and a variety of other healthcare services. This intermediate-level role is responsible for preparing accurate financial reports, analyzing account activity, supporting audits and budgeting, and ensuring compliance with accounting standards and healthcare regulations.

Requirements

  • Bachelor’s degree is required. Preferably in Accounting, Finance, or a related field.
  • Minimum of three years of accounting experience is required.
  • Strong knowledge of GAAP and familiarity with healthcare accounting standards and financial reporting.
  • Proficiency in Microsoft Office (especially Excel); experience with Workday is preferred.
  • Strong verbal and written communication skills with the ability to explain financial concepts clearly.

Responsibilities

  • Prepares routine to intermediate journal entries and reconciles inter-company transactions.
  • Reconciles bank statements and other balance sheet account schedules.
  • Reviews and reconciles sub-system postings to general ledger accounts for accuracy and completeness.
  • Prepares monthly financial statements at both the entity and departmental levels in accordance with GAAP.
  • Analyzes balance sheet accounts, reserves, and accruals, making necessary adjustments as needed.
  • Performs monthly income statement variance analysis and assists operational leaders in understanding financial results.
  • Assists in the preparation and review of annual budgets and forecasts, including supporting schedules and data analysis.
  • Prepares and reviews schedules and reports required for internal and external audits, tax filings, and regulatory reporting.
  • Researches accounting standards and healthcare-specific regulations to ensure proper treatment of transactions.
  • Monitors compliance with internal financial controls and recommends improvements where needed.
  • Assists with month-end and year-end close processes, ensuring timely and accurate reporting.
  • Collaborates with departments to provide financial insights and respond to reporting needs.
  • Performs other duties as assigned.
