About The Position

NOVA Engineering & Environmental is hiring a Staff Accountant for our Kennesaw, GA corporate office. The Staff Accountant performs professional accounting work requiring advanced knowledge of accounting principles, Generally Accepted Accounting Principles (GAAP), and sound accounting judgment. This position is responsible for preparing, analyzing, and reviewing assigned accounting records, journal entries, reconciliations, account schedules, and month-end close activities to support accurate and timely financial reporting. The role requires independent analysis of account activity, investigation and resolution of discrepancies, interpretation of financial data, and recommendations regarding appropriate accounting treatment or corrective action.

Requirements

  • Bachelor’s degree in Accounting or a closely related business field required.
  • Advanced knowledge of GAAP, financial reporting concepts, account reconciliations, journal entries, accrual accounting, and accounting controls.
  • 2+ years of corporate accounting experience involving professional accounting analysis, month-end close activities, reconciliations, and financial schedules.
  • Ability to apply accounting knowledge and professional judgment to analyze transactions, interpret financial information, identify discrepancies, and recommend appropriate corrective action.
  • Strong analytical, problem-solving, organizational, and time management skills.
  • Excellent attention to detail, accuracy, documentation, and follow-through.
  • Ability to manage multiple priorities, meet deadlines, and exercise discretion in handling confidential financial information.
  • Strong interpersonal and communication skills, including the ability to explain accounting issues and support recommendations to management.
  • Proficient in Microsoft Excel and Microsoft Office Suite.

Nice To Haves

  • MBA, Master’s degree in Accounting or related field, CPA eligibility, CPA certification, or plans to pursue CPA certification preferred.
  • Public accounting, engineering industry, or Deltek Vantagepoint experience a plus.

Responsibilities

  • Perform assigned month-end and year-end close activities, including analysis of account activity and preparation of required close documentation.
  • Prepare, analyze, and post journal entries, accruals, and account reclassifications in accordance with GAAP and company accounting policies.
  • Prepare, review, and analyze bank reconciliations and assigned balance sheet account reconciliations, including investigation and resolution of unusual items or discrepancies.
  • Evaluate accounting transactions and supporting documentation to determine appropriate classification, treatment, and recording under GAAP and company procedures.
  • Review accounts payable transactions, payment requests, and employee expense reports for accuracy, completeness, proper coding, policy compliance, and appropriate accounting treatment.
  • Maintain and analyze supporting schedules for prepaid expenses, accrued liabilities, fixed assets, depreciation, and other assigned accounts.
  • Prepare account analyses, financial schedules, and variance explanations; identify trends, unusual activity, or potential accounting issues and recommend corrective action as appropriate.
  • Support monthly financial reporting by analyzing assigned accounts, validating financial data, and providing explanations or documentation for management review.
  • Prepare or review business licenses, sales tax filings, and other regulatory filings requiring accounting analysis and accurate interpretation of financial records.
  • Maintain organized accounting records and supporting documentation sufficient to support financial reporting, audits, and internal control requirements.
  • Exercise professional judgment in prioritizing work, resolving accounting issues, and escalating matters that may materially affect financial reporting or compliance.
  • Perform other professional accounting duties and special projects as assigned.
