Staff Accountant - Construction

Cogent Talent Solutions•Oxford, CT
•$85,000 - $100,000

About The Position

We are seeking a highly driven, self-starting Staff Accountant with a bachelor's degree in Accounting and at least five years of hands-on experience. This is not a typical back-office accounting role; a critical priority is building inventory processes from the ground up. The role will evaluate, implement, and manage an inventory tracking system as the organization scales. The Staff Accountant independently manages full-cycle accounting, combining financial oversight with daily hands-on data entry. The position also oversees financial and job documentation, supports payroll-related work, analyzes financial and job data, and provides cross-functional support where accounting, inventory, or administrative assistance is needed. The salary range is $85,000–$100,000 per year.

Requirements

  • Bachelor's degree in Accounting.
  • At least five years of progressive accounting experience.
  • Proficiency in QuickBooks, ADP, and advanced Excel.
  • Exceptional attention to detail in data entry and document control, along with time management and problem-solving skills.
  • Demonstrated experience or strong eagerness to implement and manage an inventory system from scratch.
  • Self-starter with high accountability, strong analytical skills, and a direct, reality-based approach to financial reporting.
  • Willingness to support peers and protect shared team goals and reputation.
  • Ability to handle pressure and shifting priorities in a high-energy, dynamic atmosphere.
  • Comfort working as a sole accountant while handling both strategy and daily data entry.

Nice To Haves

  • Background in construction or manufacturing is strongly preferred.

Responsibilities

  • Manage all full-cycle accounting functions independently, including high-level financial tasks and daily data entry.
  • Oversee document control for financial files, job files, vendor records, tax documentation, and receipts to maintain accurate records and audit readiness.
  • Lead selection, setup, and rollout of an inventory tracking system; establish practices for physical inventory counts, raw material tracking, and valuation.
  • Manage day-to-day accounting operations, including general ledger maintenance, accounts payable and receivable, job costing, and month-end closing procedures.
  • Use QuickBooks, ADP, and Excel to support bookkeeping and reporting; assist with payroll-related tasks, reporting, and data entry as needed.
  • Analyze financial and job data, identify variances, and present actionable solutions directly.
  • Proactively support team members with financial, inventory, or administrative assistance as needed.
  • Promote organizational interests and team integrity through accurate reporting, compliance enforcement, and sound financial stewardship.
