About The Position

The Staff Accountant will play a key role in maintaining the financial health and operational integrity of Harness Energy. They will own the day-to-day accounting functions that keep our business running — accounts payable, accounts receivable, expense management, and month-end close. They will also oversee cash flow reporting and support multi-state sales tax compliance in coordination with our outsourced tax platform. In addition to these core responsibilities, they will actively identify and implement process improvements leveraging modern technology, workflow automation, and AI-assisted tools to drive efficiency across the accounting function.

Requirements

  • Strong organizational skills with the ability to manage multiple concurrent processes and competing deadlines
  • Excellent attention to detail and accuracy in all aspects of accounting work
  • Proficiency in QuickBooks (required)
  • Demonstrated experience with project-level accounting and job cost tracking in a field services, construction, or project-based environment
  • Ability to handle confidential financial information with discretion and professionalism
  • Strong verbal and written communication skills; ability to translate financial data into clear insights for non-finance stakeholders
  • Proactive, technology-forward mindset: genuine interest in AI adoption, accounting automation, and continuous process improvement
  • Ability to work across several software platforms including Microsoft Office 365, Slack, and ClickUp
  • 3-5 years of staff-level accounting experience required
  • Bachelor's degree in Accounting, Finance, or related field preferred; equivalent professional experience will be considered

Nice To Haves

  • hands-on experience with Ramp (expense/card platform)
  • HubSpot preferred
  • Multi-state operational experience a plus
  • familiarity with sales tax complexity across jurisdictions is beneficial
  • Experience in field services, project-based, or similar industry strongly preferred
  • Experience with Avalara or similar multi-state sales tax compliance platforms a plus
  • CPA designation or active pursuit of CPA licensure a plus, but not required

Responsibilities

  • Own the full-cycle accounts payable process, including vendor invoice review, GL coding, approval routing, and payment execution
  • Own accounts receivable functions including client invoicing, collections follow-up, and cash application
  • Manage employee expense reporting and corporate card administration through Ramp, ensuring policy compliance and accurate coding
  • Lead the monthly close process, including journal entries, account reconciliations, and preparation of financial statements in QuickBooks
  • Maintain project-level accounting records, tracking costs and revenue by project to support operational and management reporting
  • Prepare and distribute weekly and monthly cash flow reports for review by COO and fractional CFO oversight
  • Coordinate multi-state sales tax compliance in partnership with Avalara; monitor filing status and flag compliance issues
  • Identify, propose, and implement process improvements and automation opportunities within the accounting function, including the use of AI-assisted tools
  • Maintain organized financial records and documentation in accordance with company policies and internal controls
  • Serve as the primary internal point of contact for accounting-related questions from operations, project management, and leadership teams
  • Collaborate with COO and fractional CFO on ad hoc financial analysis, reporting, and special projects as needed
