About The Position

The Staff Accountant supports the Accounting Department by helping with general ledger account reconciliations, assisting with financial statement preparation, and contributing to day-to-day staff accounting duties. The primary focus of this role is to help the department improve processing speed and operate more efficiently as a team. This full-time position reports to the Controller and is ideal for a detail-oriented professional with strong accounting knowledge and advanced Excel skills who enjoys collaborating in a mission-driven environment.

Requirements

  • Strong accounting skills — solid understanding of generally accepted accounting principles (GAAP), double-entry bookkeeping, and non-profit or fund accounting concepts preferred.
  • Strong Excel skills — proficiency with advanced formulas, pivot tables, VLOOKUP/XLOOKUP, data analysis, and spreadsheet organization.
  • Bachelor’s degree in Accounting, Finance, or related field preferred; equivalent combination of education and experience will be considered.
  • 1–3 years of relevant accounting experience (staff accountant, bookkeeper, or similar role).
  • High attention to detail, accuracy, and organizational skills.
  • Ability to manage multiple deadlines and prioritize work effectively.
  • Strong written and verbal communication skills and a collaborative team mindset.

Nice To Haves

  • Non-profit experience is a plus.
  • Familiarity with accounting software (e.g., MIP, QuickBooks, Sage, or similar) preferred.

Responsibilities

  • Help with monthly, quarterly, and annual reconciliations of balance sheet accounts (cash, accounts receivable, prepaid expenses, fixed assets, accounts payable, accruals, and other general ledger accounts).
  • Assist with reconciliations of income statement accounts and help investigate variances between actual results and budget or prior periods.
  • Help identify and resolve discrepancies; document findings and assist with adjusting journal entries as needed.
  • Help maintain clear, organized reconciliation workpapers that support month-end, quarter-end, and year-end close processes.
  • Assist with the preparation of financial statements and supporting schedules for monthly, quarterly, and annual reporting.
  • Assist with the monthly, quarterly, and annual financial close, including preparation of journal entries and supporting schedules.
  • Support accounts payable and accounts receivable processes as needed (invoice coding, payment processing support, AR follow-up).
  • Help maintain the general ledger log and ensure accurate coding of transactions.
  • Help with grant-related tracking, reporting, and fund accounting schedules common to non-profit organizations.
  • Support grant tracking and billing
  • Assist with audit preparation by gathering requested documentation and workpapers.
  • Help process and review payroll-related accounting entries and reconciliations.
  • Perform other accounting and administrative duties as assigned to support the department.
  • Help identify opportunities to streamline reconciliation, financial statement preparation, and month-end close processes.
  • Propose and help implement process improvements that increase processing speed and reduce manual effort.
  • Collaborate with team members to standardize procedures, improve documentation, and enhance overall departmental efficiency.
