About The Position

The Staff Accountant is responsible for providing comprehensive financial and administrative support to ensure the accurate and timely processing of payments, receivables, and financial transactions. One position performs pre-audits of invoices and travel reimbursement vouchers and other financial documents to verify compliance with applicable policies, procedures, and accounting requirements prior to payment. Other key responsibilities include processing and tracking accounts receivables (including but not limited to payments received by cash, checks, credit cards and wires) and accounts payables entries in the MaineDOT and State’s Accounting Systems. The second Staff Accountant will be responsible for reconciling internal accounting records with computerized/central accounting records to review and verify the correctness and classification of transactions posted to accounting journals, general ledger accounts, and other subsidiary records in order to ensure accuracy and balance accounts. Other responsibilities include ensuring fixed asset inventories are properly recorded and reconciled as well as organizing the annual inventory of fixed assets for the Highway/Facilities fund assets, working with other program/regional managers to ensure timely certification.

Requirements

  • Knowledge of generally accepted accounting theories, principles, methods, practices, and terminology.
  • Knowledge of computerized accounting systems, strong Excel skills are required.
  • Knowledge of standardized desktop technology and products.
  • Ability to apply generally accepted accounting principles to account for revenue, expenditures, accounts payable, and accounts receivable.
  • Ability to communicate effectively and function effectively as a member of a team.
  • Education, training, and/or experience in accounting, business administration, financial planning, budgeting, or another related field demonstrating competency in analyzing data and records, interpreting policies, rules, and laws, identifying process and procedure deficiencies, and developing practical solutions.

Responsibilities
