About The Position

Herring Bank is seeking an analytical, execution-focused Financial Accounting Staff Accountant II to join our Financial Accounting team. This position plays an important role in supporting the Bank’s accounting, financial reporting, and audit functions while helping ensure the accuracy and integrity of financial records. Reporting to the Financial Accounting Manager, this role will execute recurring close activities, including accruals, prepaids, fixed assets, reconciliations, and other month-end and quarter-end responsibilities. The ideal candidate is detail-oriented, comfortable working with deadlines, and motivated to identify opportunities to improve and automate accounting processes.

Requirements

  • Bachelor’s degree in Accounting required.
  • 3–5 years of progressive accounting experience.
  • Strong understanding of U.S. GAAP and double-entry accounting.
  • Knowledge of general ledger accounting, account reconciliations, fixed assets, deferred fees, and financial statement preparation.
  • Advanced proficiency in Microsoft Excel.
  • Strong analytical, organizational, and problem-solving skills.
  • Excellent attention to detail with the ability to manage multiple priorities and deadlines.
  • Strong written and verbal communication skills.

Nice To Haves

  • CPA or CPA eligibility is a plus.
  • Previous experience in banking, financial services, or another high-volume transactional environment is preferred.
  • Experience with banking general ledger systems, core banking platforms, or ERP systems is preferred.

Responsibilities

  • Prepare and post recurring journal entries, including accruals, prepaids, depreciation, and other close-related entries.
  • Maintain the fixed asset subledger, including depreciation calculations, additions, disposals, and capital expenditure tracking.
  • Execute assigned portions of the monthly and quarterly close checklist and ensure tasks are completed accurately and on schedule.
  • Prepare and maintain balance sheet substantiations and general ledger reconciliations.
  • Research and resolve general ledger discrepancies and unusual account activity.
  • Maintain and reconcile bank-specific accounting schedules, including amortization and accretion schedules, acquired loans and securities, FDIC assessments, premises and equipment, OREO, and other applicable accounts.
  • Assist with accounting treatment and schedules related to deferred fees and other banking-specific transactions.
  • Prepare supporting schedules and documentation for financial reporting.
  • Maintain organized, audit-ready workpapers and assist with internal and external audit requests.
  • Collaborate with Accounting, Finance, and other departments to research and resolve accounting-related issues.
  • Identify opportunities to streamline, automate, and strengthen recurring accounting processes and controls.
  • Perform additional accounting and financial analysis as needed.
