About The Position

This student employee position involves chamber music coaching and trucking music instruments and equipment for the St. Olaf Music Academy. The role requires proficiency on a string instrument, the ability to teach rhythm, pitch, phrasing, dynamics, and social cohesiveness to student players, and an outgoing and encouraging personality. Responsibilities include leading by example in coaching sessions, developing professional relationships with campers, being responsive to staff and faculty, applying youth development principles, adhering to safety and security guidelines, and carefully trucking music equipment. The position also involves interacting with diverse individuals, demonstrating initiative, and collaborating with faculty and staff.

Requirements

  • Proficient on a string instrument, well enough to participate in the group and/or demonstrate to the student players.
  • Knowledge of what makes an ensemble sound good.
  • Ability to work on and “teach” rhythm, pitch, phrasing, dynamics, and social cohesiveness.
  • Ability to safely perform the physical work required of all duties with or without reasonable accommodation.
  • Excellent musical credentials.

Responsibilities

  • Be on time and ready for chamber coaching sessions and lead by example.
  • Develop a professional relationship with each camper in your group to provide a welcoming and inclusive environment both socially and musically.
  • Be responsive via phone or email to staff and faculty during camp.
  • Apply basic youth development principles in working with academy students through communication, relationship development, respect, and involvement.
  • Be aware of and implement all safety guidelines.
  • Follow and uphold all security rules and procedures.
  • Maintain high standards of health and safety in all activities for academy students.
  • Truck music equipment and instruments with care.
  • Interact with people from a diversity of backgrounds and experience.
  • Demonstrate a strong sense of initiative and self-direction.
  • Work collaboratively with faculty, staff, and counselors throughout the week.
