About The Position

This role supports the Underwriting Strategy function by analyzing portfolio performance across Selective’s commercial market segments, including Contracting, Manufacturing, Mercantile & Service, Technology, Human Services, Real Estate, and other industry verticals. The analyst translates segment, diversification, competitive, and regional performance data into strategic insights that help inform underwriting and growth priorities. All job duties and responsibilities must be carried out in compliance with applicable legal and regulatory requirements.

Requirements

  • Demonstrates strong knowledge of commercial market segments, industry verticals, and related underwriting and competitive dynamics, with the ability to analyze portfolio and market data and translate insights into actionable business recommendations.
  • Possesses strong analytical, communication, and cross-functional collaboration skills, along with experience leveraging business intelligence tools to support strategic decision-making.
  • Bachelor’s degree in Business, Finance, Risk Management, Insurance, Economics, or related field.
  • 5–8 years of commercial P&C insurance experience in underwriting, portfolio analysis, actuarial, analytics, or related roles.

Nice To Haves

  • Knowledge of multiple market segments, actuarial concepts, competitive intelligence, distribution performance metrics, diversification strategies, and external market data sources is preferred.
  • Professional insurance designations and experience working across both field and home office environments are a plus.
  • CPCU, ARM, or other relevant professional designations preferred

Responsibilities

  • Monitor and analyze portfolio performance across market segments, including growth, profitability, retention, diversification, and risk quality.
  • Identify trends, concentration risks, opportunities, and competitive dynamics that impact our market segments.
  • Support quarterly underwriting reviews, countrywide reviews, and strategic planning materials.
  • Partner with Market Segment leadership, Product, Actuarial, Claims, Underwriting Practices, and regional teams to develop strategic insights.
  • Support diversification strategy, segment monitoring, and execution tracking.
  • Analyze external market and industry trends impacting segment performance and strategy.
  • Help improve segment-level tools, reporting, and analytical frameworks.
