Sr. Technical Writer, Flight Operations

About The Position

This role is responsible for collaborating with subject matter experts in creating, amending, and submitting controlled documents to Transport Canada Civil Aviation directly in support of the Air Operator Certificates for both WestJet and WestJet Encore. These functions include document management, creation, organization and control of over 40 regulated and other controlled documents for both airlines. Due to the legal, technical and precise nature of the documents under the direct control of this role, including documents for flight control in normal and emergency situations, this role is required to publish flawless documentation through robust quality assurance.

Requirements

Recognized diploma from a college, technical school, or university in Technical Writing, Journalism, Communications, Business Administration, or related field.
3-5 years of experience as a technical writer in aviation, or similarly complex technical environment.
Strong understanding of document management principles, processes, and best practices.
Exceptional writing, editing, proofreading, and document quality control skills.
Experience authoring and managing content in structured authoring environments, XML-based authoring tools, content management systems (CMS), or component content management systems (CCMS).
Experience with Microsoft Office applications is required.
Proven ability to quickly learn, understand, and communicate complex technical concepts.
Experience developing technical documentation, procedures, manuals, and work instructions for diverse audiences.
Exceptional attention to detail, with strong communication, collaboration, and interpersonal skills.
Ability to manage multiple priorities and perform effectively in a fast-paced environment with changing deadlines and business requirements.
Demonstrated ability to work independently with excellent organizational, planning, and time management skills.

Nice To Haves

Experience with technical publishing and documentation tools; familiarity with Adobe FrameMaker and Adobe Acrobat is considered an asset.
Experience working in a highly regulated industry; aviation, aerospace, transportation, or energy industry experience is considered an asset.
Knowledge of structured writing methodologies, information architecture, single-sourcing, or topic-based authoring is considered an asset.
Fluency in both English and French, including the ability to write and edit professional documentation in French, is considered an asset.

Responsibilities

Incorporate content provided by Subject Matter Experts (SMEs) into regulated source documents accurately, efficiently, and in a timely manner using specialized authoring and document management software.
Edit and review regulated documents providing technical writing, editorial and process improvements recommendations to document owners and SMEs.
Incorporate aircraft normal and emergency procedures (e.g. Boeing, De Havilland) into WestJet and WestJet Encore flight manuals while ensuring regulatory compliance and operational accuracy.
Liaise, both verbally and in writing, with Transport Canada Civil Aviation, including the Principal Operations Inspectors and Cabin Safety Inspectors.
Maintain and manage source files and controlled documents required for the Air Operator Certificates, ensuring effective document control, file management and records management practices.
Prepare, update, and maintain document control elements, including revision summaries, lists of effective pages/sections, and other required regulatory documentation, in accordance with Transport Canada requirements.
Develop and maintain controlled documents in accordance with applicable regulations, policies, and procedures to support ongoing compliance with the Air Operator Certificates.
Support the printing and distribution of relevant materials.
Perform comprehensive quality assurance reviews of regulated and technical documents to ensure accuracy, consistency, and compliance with regulatory, corporate, and publishing standards.
Ensure all assigned documentation is maintained in accordance with established document control processes, formatting standards, and regulatory requirements.
