About The Position

Nova Biomedical is seeking a hands-on Senior Systems Engineer to lead the development, integration, characterization, and technical ownership of advanced laboratory instrumentation. The engineer will drive technical investigations, develop system and subsystem requirements, support architecture and design decisions, and collaborate with Mechanical, Electrical, Software, Assay, and Verification teams throughout product development. The role calls for strong systems thinking, troubleshooting, experimental design, data analysis, root-cause investigation, and communication with multidisciplinary teams. Experience with laboratory instrumentation, fluidic, thermal, and motion systems is highly desirable. The position supports products through concept development, feasibility, integration, verification, and product release, including prototype work through Alpha, Beta, and launch. It also provides technical leadership and mentoring to junior engineers. The work is hybrid, with at least four days per week onsite in Norwood, Massachusetts and one day per week working from home. The targeted salary range is $125,000–$145,000.

Requirements

  • At least 8 years of engineering experience developing complex products or instrumentation systems.
  • Demonstrated success leading technical investigations from problem identification through resolution and implementation of corrective actions.
  • Experience using experimental methods and engineering studies to evaluate system performance, reliability, and technical risk.
  • Experience integrating and troubleshooting multidisciplinary systems involving mechanical, electrical, software, thermal, or fluidic subsystems.
  • Experience translating user needs, design goals, and technical constraints into engineering requirements and verification approaches.
  • Ability to independently lead technical workstreams, drive technical decisions, and deliver results with minimal supervision.
  • Experience mentoring junior engineers and collaborating across functional teams.
  • Experience supporting products through concept development, feasibility, integration, verification, and product release.
  • Strong understanding of systems engineering principles and product development processes.
  • Ability to troubleshoot complex multidisciplinary systems and solve poorly defined technical problems through structured root-cause investigation.
  • Experience working with mechanical, thermal, fluidic, electrical, or software-integrated products.
  • Strong experimental design and data analysis skills.
  • Proficiency with engineering analysis tools such as Excel, Minitab, MATLAB, Python, or equivalent.
  • Familiarity with requirements management, risk management, and verification methodologies.
  • Ability to communicate effectively with multidisciplinary technical teams.
  • Ability to stand or sit for extended periods, handle laboratory equipment and instrumentation with manual dexterity, and lift and carry up to 25 pounds.
  • Comfort performing repetitive tasks and working in a laboratory environment with potential exposure to chemicals or biological materials.
  • Ability to use required personal protective equipment (PPE).
  • Ability to bend, reach, or move within the laboratory environment occasionally.

Nice To Haves

  • Experience working in laboratory or regulated product development environments.
  • Working knowledge of CAD tools, preferably SolidWorks, and ability to develop test fixtures, prototype components, and engineering concepts.
  • Familiarity with GD&T and DFM/DFA principles.

Responsibilities

  • Lead development and integration of complex subsystems and system-level features for laboratory instrumentation.
  • Develop, refine, and maintain system and subsystem requirements.
  • Design and execute experiments, test plans, protocols, and engineering studies to assess feasibility and characterize system performance.
  • Analyze results to identify root causes, improve system reliability, and retire technical risks.
  • Support system architecture, interface definition, technical trade studies, and risk management throughout product development.
  • Document technical findings through reports, design reviews, and engineering documentation.
  • Mentor junior engineers and provide technical leadership within assigned project areas.
  • Support prototype development, integration, and troubleshooting through Alpha, Beta, and product launch.
  • Drive investigations and engineering activities to improve system robustness, reliability, and long-term performance.

Benefits

  • Flexible medical, dental, and vision coverage.
  • Competitive 401(k) company match.
  • Bonus program.
  • Generous PTO and paid holidays.
  • Tuition reimbursement.
  • Hybrid and flexible work arrangements.
  • Professional development, engagement, and events.
  • Company marketplace for lunch and snacks at the Norwood, Billerica, and Westbrook offices.
  • Company-subsidized cafeteria at the Waltham office.
