Sr. Systems Engineer — Systems & Engineering Operations, Lunar HLS

BLUE ORIGIN•Denver, CO
•$133,500 - $203,263

About The Position

The Sr. Systems Engineer is part of Blue Origin’s Lunar Permanence business unit and supports the Human Landing System (HLS), which will carry astronauts to the Moon’s surface and return them safely to Orion. This dual-hatted role sits on the System Definition & Certification team and combines program technical execution with contributions to the requirements, safety, and verification baseline used to demonstrate that the vehicle is safe to fly crew. The role gathers and integrates technical needs from vehicle teams and communicates them to the organizations responsible for supporting infrastructure, ground systems, and test capabilities. It also helps keep the program’s technical operations effective through well-executed reviews, organized and accessible data, visible progress tracking, and executable processes. The balance between these areas may shift with program priorities. The position favors lean, tool-driven workflows that reduce manual effort and makes technical status legible to leadership. Relocation is provided. Travel is expected up to 25% of the time. The role requires eligibility under the stated U.S. export-control requirements.

Requirements

  • B.S. in aerospace, systems, or a related engineering field; an advanced degree may substitute for part of the experience requirement.
  • At least 8 years of relevant systems engineering and/or engineering-operations experience in a technical field with a complex regulatory environment, such as aerospace, defense, or nuclear.
  • Experience developing requirements, safety, and verification and validation baselines in a systems-engineering context.
  • Experience planning and executing projects to cost and schedule, including milestones, risk, and cross-team coordination.
  • Track record of building lean, tool-driven processes and gaining their adoption without relying on direct authority.
  • Working fluency with systems-engineering and program tools such as Jama, Cameo, Windchill, DOORS, Jira, and Confluence, and judgment to make tool decisions that reduce manual effort.
  • Strong stakeholder-management skills and comfort working across engineering, program, and leadership levels.
  • Ability to identify process gaps and independently develop and implement solutions.
  • Must be a U.S. citizen or national, U.S. permanent resident (current Green Card holder), or lawfully admitted into the U.S. as a refugee or granted asylum.

Nice To Haves

  • M.S. degree is preferred; an advanced degree in an engineering or technical discipline is a preferred qualification.
  • Experience in human spaceflight, crewed vehicles, launch vehicles, or other complex integrated systems, including ownership of complex, cross-functional operational processes with minimal direction.
  • Demonstrated experience leading or co-leading formal engineering reviews and managing associated documentation, artifacts, and customer contractual requirements.
  • Experience in another safety-critical or regulated industry, such as medical devices, commercial aviation, nuclear, or automotive, supporting requirements, verification, or safety baselines for a major product area.
  • Experience as a customer-facing technical interface with NASA or a comparable government/prime customer.
  • History of introducing tools or methods adopted at scale that measurably reduce cycle time or error rate.

Responsibilities

  • Participate in requirements and verification and validation planning, and support anomaly investigation and root-cause analysis when the vehicle does not behave as designed.
  • Review others’ deliverables for subtle flaws and gaps, beyond surface correctness.
  • Develop technical requirements for major program projects by translating vehicle needs for ground systems, test capabilities, and supporting infrastructure into clear requirements.
  • Gather and integrate input across vehicle teams and serve as the flight-side interface to organizations delivering supporting capabilities.
  • Develop and refine operational and project-execution processes to improve efficiency and team communication.
  • Plan and execute major program milestones, including CDR, readiness tracking, entrance and exit criteria, scheduling, and logistics coordination.
  • Maintain and improve customer interactions, review processes, procedures, and documentation standards for Lunar programs.
  • Own technical progress tracking and burndown across the program, including decision tickets, TPMs, and curated status views for standups and program meetings.
