HLS Autonomy Software Systems Engineer II

BLUE ORIGIN•West Melbourne, FL
•$123,714 - $188,945

About The Position

This role is part of Blue Origin’s Lunar Permanence business unit, which develops Blue Moon lunar landers and related products. The engineer will work on systems and software across Lunar programs, collaborating with software development engineers and other disciplines. The software directly affects planned missions, and effective cross-disciplinary collaboration and a strong commitment to safe, repeatable human spaceflight are important to the role. Under general supervision, the engineer independently develops state machine definitions for assigned subsystems, such as an actuator or sensor chain. The position also owns software requirements, verification plans, and test cases within its assigned scope; contributes to fault management and FMEA-driven requirements; and supports hardware- and software-in-the-loop testing. The engineer works with flight software, guidance, navigation and control, and controls engineers on requirements flowdown for assigned interfaces, and develops tool, test, and verification software as needed.

Requirements

  • Bachelor’s degree in computer science, computer engineering, aerospace engineering, mechanical engineering, electrical engineering, or a related field, or equivalent experience.
  • 2–5 years of professional experience.
  • Experience with C/C++ or Python scripting.
  • Demonstrated experience developing software requirements and test cases.
  • Hands-on experience with state machine definition, controls theory, or MATLAB Simulink; Stateflow exposure is preferred.
  • Experience working on a cross-functional engineering team.
  • Must be a U.S. citizen or national, U.S. permanent resident (current Green Card holder), or lawfully admitted into the U.S. as a refugee or granted asylum.

Nice To Haves

  • Direct experience building state machine logic for actuator management, initialization sequences, or fault response.
  • Experience with HIL/SIL test tools.
  • Exposure to safety-critical standards such as ISO 26262, DO-178C, ARP-4754A, or NPR 7150.2D.
  • Exposure to MATLAB Simulink Stateflow.

Responsibilities

  • Independently develop state machine definitions in Simulink/Stateflow for assigned subsystems under general supervision.
  • Write and maintain software requirements, verification plans, and test cases for owned scope.
  • Participate in fault management discussions and begin contributing to FMEA-driven requirements for assigned subsystems.
  • Support HIL/SIL test setup and execution, and begin authoring test procedures independently.
  • Work with FSW, GN&C, or controls engineers on requirements flowdown for assigned interfaces.
  • Develop tool, test, and verification software as needed.
