About The Position

The Senior System Protection Engineer designs, analyzes, and protects moderately complex high-voltage power systems. The role provides oversight to lower-level engineers and technicians developing and implementing protection schemes for transmission and distribution systems, coordinates protection schemes with other utilities, and develops control philosophies and sequences for larger, moderately complex generation, transmission, and distribution systems. The Transmission and High Voltage Distribution System Protection team protects and supports the reliability of Consumers Energy’s 46 kV and 138 kV electric transmission and distribution systems. The team designs, configures, and maintains protection schemes and relay systems, and supports projects from conceptual planning and engineering design through commissioning, operation, and maintenance. Its work includes protection applications, relay settings and coordination, fault analysis, short-circuit studies, protection system modeling, real-time system support, equipment evaluations, and compliance with NERC reliability standards. This is a hybrid position with required onsite days Monday, Tuesday, and Thursday. The preferred location is Parnall in Jackson, Michigan; candidates near the Grand Rapids, Battle Creek, Traverse City, or Bay City Service Centers may also be considered.
