Sr Structural Loads Engineer - New Glenn

Blue Origin•Huntsville, WA

About The Position

Blue Origin is hiring a Senior Structural Loads Engineer to support the development and operations of New Glenn, a reusable, heavy-lift orbital launch vehicle designed to carry people and payloads to low-Earth orbit, geostationary transfer orbit, cislunar space, and beyond. As part of a small team, the engineer will generate, communicate, and validate structural loads supporting the development of space vehicles and test and launch facilities. The role requires proficiency in loads analysis, including physics-based hand calculations, finite element methods, static and dynamic analysis, and forcing-function development. Candidates should be ready to take ownership of unfamiliar, complex problems, communicate effectively, and deliver technically excellent results in a dynamic environment. The role involves launch vehicle coupled loads analysis, finite element model development and correlation, loads development for vehicles and ground systems, and mathematical modeling and simulation. It also includes computationally intensive work with large engineering datasets and other low- and high-frequency structural loads tasks. The position requires a B.S. in Mechanical or Aerospace Engineering and at least eight years of relevant engineering experience. Applicants must meet the stated U.S. citizenship, permanent-residency, refugee, or asylum eligibility requirement. Blue Origin describes an inclusive, collaborative workplace and encourages applicants who are excited about the role even if they do not meet every desired qualification. Benefits listed include health and insurance coverage, paid parental leave, disability coverage, a 401(k) match, education support, stock options for eligible regular employees, paid time off, and company-paid holidays.

Requirements

  • B.S. degree in Mechanical or Aerospace Engineering.
  • At least 8 years of relevant engineering experience.
  • Passion for aerospace vehicle structural loads and related analysis.
  • Finite Element Modeling experience.
  • Proficiency in NASTRAN and MATLAB.
  • Ability to solve varied static and dynamic structural problems using physics-based analytical methods, including hand calculations, in-house tools, and third-party commercial analytical tools.
  • Ability to process and present data for engineering applications.
  • Ability to earn trust, maintain positive and professional relationships, and contribute to a culture of inclusion.
  • Must be a U.S. citizen or national, U.S. permanent resident (current Green Card holder), or lawfully admitted into the U.S. as a refugee or granted asylum.

Nice To Haves

  • 5 or more years of experience in launch and/or space vehicle structural loads prediction, analysis, measurement, or testing.
  • Spacecraft and launch vehicle loads experience.
  • Spacecraft and launch vehicle structural analysis, design, build, and test experience.
  • Experience with fatigue analysis and spectrum development.
  • Experience with structural dynamic (modal) testing and correlation.
  • Experience with instrumentation for ground and flight tests.
  • Experience with mathematical modeling, simulation, and control algorithms.
  • Experience with high-performance computing, large dataset management, AI, data science, and cloud computing.
  • Experience with commercial software tools including HYPERMESH, ANSYS, DMAP, IMAT, PYTHON, FORTRAN, and LS-DYNA.
  • Experience with simulation, mathematical modeling, data analysis, and technical writing.

Responsibilities

  • Develop and execute launch vehicle Coupled Loads Analyses (CLA), coordinating across disciplines to establish appropriate analysis inputs and assumptions and generate required outputs.
  • Document and communicate CLA and other loads results to internal, government, and commercial customers.
  • Develop and refine finite element models, and validate and correlate models to modal tests.
  • Reduce finite element models using Component Modal Synthesis methods such as Craig-Bampton.
  • Develop general loads for launch vehicles and related ground systems.
  • Develop mathematical models and simulations for loads analysis.
  • Perform resource-intensive computing; manage, reduce, and post-process large datasets for engineering applications.
  • Perform other low- and high-frequency structural loads tasks as required.

Benefits

  • Medical, dental, and vision insurance.
  • Basic and supplemental life insurance.
  • Paid parental leave.
  • Short- and long-term disability.
  • 401(k) with company match of up to 5%.
  • Education Support Program.
  • Stock options for regular employees working at least 20 hours per week.
  • Up to four weeks of paid time off per year based on weekly scheduled hours.
  • Up to 14 company-paid holidays.
  • Depending on role type and job level, employees may be eligible for benefits and bonuses based on individual contributions and company results; amounts and eligibility are not guaranteed.
