About The Position

Apex Companies is seeking an experienced structural CAD designer/drafter to serve as a CAD manager and support the growth and delivery of its bridge and transportation structures practice across the Pacific Northwest. The role provides technical leadership, oversees CAD production across disciplines, and helps maintain consistent quality and design standards across projects. Working closely with structural engineers and project managers, the technician owns structural drawing production from initial setup through final deliverables. The work includes organizing and coordinating drawing sets, developing construction details, maintaining consistency, resolving drafting and coordination issues, and ensuring deliverables are accurate, complete, and ready for engineering review. The position requires independence, sound technical judgment, and the ability to manage production across multiple projects while meeting schedules and quality requirements.

Requirements

Associate or bachelor's degree in CAD/Drafting, Engineering Technology, or a related field.
10 or more years of experience in civil or structural engineering drafting, emphasizing bridges and transportation structures.
Experience leading or coordinating CAD production teams and managing drawing standards and quality control processes.
Strong leadership, communication, and team coordination skills across technical disciplines.
Ability to independently develop, organize, coordinate, and complete structural construction drawing packages with limited supervision.
Extensive knowledge of bridge and transportation structure drafting, detailing, and design documentation.
Proficiency with AutoCAD and ProjectWise.
Proficiency with Bluebeam Revu, Microsoft Word, Microsoft Excel, and Adobe PDF tools.
Strong understanding of CAD standards, quality control processes, and applicable design guidelines and codes.
Ability to identify and resolve technical and production challenges and communicate effectively with project teams and clients.
Strong organizational and time management skills, including coordinating multiple projects, deadlines, and competing priorities.
Understanding of project scopes, schedules, budgets, and resource allocation.
Strong attention to detail and commitment to accurate, consistent, high-quality deliverables.

Nice To Haves

Working knowledge of MicroStation.
Familiarity with WSDOT and other Washington State local agencies’ guidelines and drafting practices.
Experience supporting multidisciplinary transportation infrastructure projects.

Responsibilities

Own structural drawing production for bridge and transportation structure projects from initial setup through final delivery, coordinating sheets, details, references, revisions, and drawing set completeness.
Manage drawing production based on engineering markups, design information, project standards, and engineer direction; identify missing information, inconsistencies, and coordination issues and follow through to resolution.
Lead and coordinate CAD production, including resource planning and workload management across projects and pursuits.
Develop, review, and maintain structural design drawings, construction plans, and CAD models using Civil 3D or MicroStation.
Prepare accurate plans and details from sketches, markups, design notes, and engineer direction.
Apply knowledge of structural engineering and construction practices to bridge layouts, concrete reinforcement detailing, and structural steel detailing.
Establish, maintain, and improve CAD standards, templates, drawing libraries, and production workflows aligned with Apex and client requirements.
Coordinate CAD production with engineers, project managers, other disciplines, and external consultants.
Perform and coordinate quality reviews of CAD drawings and models to ensure compliance with project specifications, client standards, and quality management procedures.
Track and maintain quality control documentation, design decisions, and project records throughout the project lifecycle.
Lead CAD staff meetings, technical workshops, and training sessions.
Oversee CAD-related project documentation, file management, and final archiving of drawings, models, and other design deliverables.
Maintain familiarity with applicable design standards, client requirements, industry practices, and emerging CAD technologies.
Coordinate software training, updates, and technical support with IT and other internal resources.
Support development of CAD standards and production procedures for new projects and pursuits.
Mentor and develop technical staff while supporting career growth and team performance.
