Sr Staff SW Development Engineer
About The Position
Dexcom is seeking a Sr Staff SW Development Engineer to contribute within its System and Solution Organization, building cloud-native, data-driven, and AI-augmented platform capabilities. The role works closely with AI Platform Engineers to deliver scalable backend services, APIs, and infrastructure that power Dexcom’s AI features. The team develops at high velocity using AI-assisted tools while maintaining the reliability and regulatory discipline required for medical-grade systems, including ISO and FDA standards. The engineer will lead architecture, design, and evolution of scalable backend platforms, APIs, event-driven services, and data systems. This senior technical leader will shape strategy across teams, advance AI-assisted development practices, guide the full software lifecycle, modernize legacy platforms, mentor senior engineers, improve developer experience and cloud operations, and lead production incident response. The role partners with Product, Architecture, Security, SRE, Data, and Engineering leaders to deliver strategic initiatives. The position is remote, with a home office; candidates are not required to live within commuting distance of a Dexcom site. A hybrid environment may be available to those living within commuting distance, and candidates may ask about the Flex workplace option. Travel is 0–5%.
Requirements
- Bachelor’s degree in a technical discipline and at least 13 years of related experience; or a Master’s degree and at least 8 years of equivalent industry experience; or a PhD and at least 5 years of experience.
- Extensive experience architecting and delivering large-scale distributed cloud-native systems.
- Deep backend development expertise using Python and Kotlin and modern software engineering practices for highly available, mission-critical applications.
- Proven track record designing scalable event-driven architectures using Pub/Sub, Kafka, or equivalent messaging and streaming platforms.
- Strong experience building data-intensive services using Firestore, Cloud SQL, and other cloud-native persistence technologies.
- Expert knowledge of cloud platforms, preferably Google Cloud Platform, including security, reliability, observability, and cost optimization practices.
- Demonstrated ability to lead technical strategy and influence architectural decisions across teams, organizations, and product areas.
- Strong experience with containerized and cloud-native deployment models, including Docker, Kubernetes, CI/CD pipelines, and Infrastructure-as-Code practices.
- Proven ability to drive adoption of AI-assisted development tools and workflows while maintaining software quality, security, and maintainability.
- Exceptional problem-solving, communication, and stakeholder management skills, with the ability to align engineering investments with business outcomes.
- Experience mentoring senior engineers and serving as a recognized technical leader who elevates engineering practices across an organization.
Responsibilities
- Lead the architecture, design, and evolution of scalable cloud-native backend platforms, APIs, event-driven services, and data systems.
- Drive technical strategy and engineering excellence across teams, influencing architecture, technology adoption, and long-term platform investments.
- Establish standards, workflows, and best practices for AI-assisted software development to improve engineering velocity, code quality, and developer productivity.
- Provide technical leadership across solution design, implementation, automated testing, performance optimization, security, observability, deployment, and operational readiness.
- Design and optimize distributed systems using GCP services such as Firestore, Cloud SQL, and Pub/Sub to support scalability, reliability, and cost efficiency.
- Partner with Product, Architecture, Security, SRE, Data, and Engineering leaders on technical roadmaps, cross-functional challenges, and strategic initiatives.
- Lead modernization of legacy platforms and services, improving simplicity, maintainability, and operational excellence.
- Mentor and coach senior engineers, foster technical growth, and raise engineering standards across the organization.
- Improve developer experience, CI/CD automation, system observability, resiliency, and cloud cost optimization.
- Provide technical leadership during production incidents and critical escalations, lead root cause analysis, and ensure long-term corrective actions.
