Sr. Staff ML Infra Engineer - Offline Infra & Training

About The Position

Coupang’s Search & Discovery organization is hiring a Staff Software Engineer specializing in ML infrastructure to design and implement durable, efficient software solutions for the structured and unstructured data used to train complex machine learning models and serve them online. The organization optimizes customers’ navigation experience and supports ranking and recommendation systems that contribute significantly to Coupang’s sales and growth. The role involves building scalable offline and online ML platforms for ranking, recommendation, and business decision-making. The engineer will work with billions of user interaction records and petabytes of raw log data, transforming them into useful data objects for engineers and scientists, and helping serve complex ML models in real time to customers. The role includes technical leadership, cross-functional collaboration, and mentoring other engineers.

Requirements

Bachelor’s degree in computer science, electrical engineering, mathematics, statistics, or a closely related field.
At least 5 years of professional experience in applied machine learning.
Experience in machine learning, deep learning, and statistical modeling.
Proficiency in Python and/or Java.
Experience building production-grade ML systems.

Nice To Haves

Knowledge of computer science fundamentals, including data structures, algorithms, performance complexity, and how computer architecture affects software performance, such as I/O and memory tuning.
Experience with big data tools and ETL frameworks such as Hadoop, Hive, Presto, Spark, Scala, and Apache Airflow.
Experience with ML frameworks such as TensorFlow and PyTorch.
Experience deploying robust, scalable data pipelines that process petabytes of data.
Experience managing mission-critical services with high throughput and low latency.
Experience integrating applications and platforms with cloud technologies such as AWS and GCP.
Strong verbal and written communication skills.
Ability to conduct meetings, deliver professional presentations, and explain complex concepts and technical material to non-technical users.
Experience with machine learning platforms for search and discovery rankings.

Responsibilities

Drive execution of the end-to-end data platform and data quality roadmap for Search & Discovery ML efforts.
Take ownership of, consolidate, and optimize core Search & Discovery data logging, processing, and ML model training pipelines.
Develop and scale data infrastructure for batch and real-time data processing, monitoring, and debugging of ML experiments.
Drive the design and implementation of scalable ML-based ranking systems and online ML inference services.
Partner with Data Scientists, Analysts, Product Managers, Indexing Platform Engineers, Ranking Engineers, and Data Platform Engineers to understand and deliver on offline and online needs.
Research, analyze, and select technical approaches to challenging development and integration problems.
Coach and mentor other engineers in processes and methodologies.
