About The Position

Intertek, a leading provider of quality and safety solutions, is seeking a Sr. Staff Engineer – HVAC Performance to join their Electrical team in Plano, Texas. This role involves evaluating product conformance to standards, reviewing reports, resolving technical issues, and leading technical training. The position also entails managing technical operations and client communication. The role requires at least 25% travel.

Requirements

  • Bachelor’s degree in Mechanical Engineering
  • Electrical Engineering degree considered with relevant experience
  • 10+ years of experience in HVAC product design/testing, energy efficiency, and the regulatory landscape
  • Ability to read and interpret: Electrical schematics & one-lines, Mechanical drawings, Piping Diagrams, Standards and technical specifications
  • Comfortable working in a fast-paced, multi-project environment
  • Ability to apply principles of logic or scientific thinking to a wide range of intellectual and practical problems
  • Knowledge of Microsoft Office software, including Word, Excel, and Outlook
  • Advanced experience with U.S., Canadian, and other International Energy Efficiency standards, i.e., ASHRAE, AHRI, CFR, ISO
  • Ability to deal with non-verbal symbolism (formulas, scientific equations, graphs, etc.) in its most difficult phases
  • Ability to deal with a variety of abstract and concrete variables
  • Ability to make technical decisions and engineering judgments independently where limited standardization exists
  • Excellent communication skills, in both verbal and written formats
  • Excellent leadership skills
  • Excellent interpersonal skills
  • Must possess a valid unrestricted driver’s license and clean driving record
  • Ability to travel up to 25%, as business needs dictate

Nice To Haves

  • Master's degree in Mechanical or Electrical Engineering
  • Experience with programming and operating psychrometric chambers
  • Experience diagnosing issues with HVAC Equipment and implementing resolutions
  • Familiarity with standards such as: AHRI 140, AHRI 210/240, AHRI 340/360, AHRI 840, AHRI 920, AHRI 1230, AHRI 1380, ASHRAE 37
  • Project coordination or customer-facing technical experience

Responsibilities

  • Interpret and apply UL, CSA, AHRI, ASHRAE, and DOE requirements to equipment under testing (EUT).
  • Develop, lead, and/or support testing, inspection and certification programs.
  • Plan, coordinate and control progress of project work and keep the client informed.
  • Review project files for compliance with operating procedures.
  • Make technical decisions relating to the interpretation of standards, applicability of standards and development of test programs.
  • Interact with clients, accreditors and/or AHJs to resolve issues and elevate issues to the next level of management when applicable.
  • Participate in technical committees and standards development.
  • May present and publish technical papers.
  • Supervise, train and develop junior staff.
  • Make recommendations on capital expenditures and commission new test apparatus.
  • May serve as technical director for sub-stream or location.
  • Generate and approve engineering judgments in appropriate fields.
  • Final engineering review (signature authority) for final reports.
  • Provide input into quality assurance of programs in appropriate fields.
  • Organize resources for best utilization.
  • Follow, implement and ensure Company policies and procedures are followed.
  • Provide support to other departments or staff as required.
  • Promote new business directions consistent with Company objectives.
  • Accomplish special assignments as directed by management.
  • Perform other work as required.
