About The Position

Northrop Grumman Aeronautics Systems is hiring a Sr Staff Electromechanical Engineer for its Structures Test Lab (STL) in Redondo Beach, California. The STL conducts static and fatigue structural testing, from component-level tests to full-scale articles, on research and development and flight hardware. This position requires 100% onsite work, travel up to 25% of the time, and a Secret clearance at start. The engineer applies electrical, mechanical, and computer skills throughout structural testing. The role spans requirements derivation, test fixture design, setup and planning, readiness reviews, execution, and reporting. It requires proficiency across electrical, mechanical, hydraulic, and pneumatic testing functions, and familiarity with data-acquisition and load-control hardware and instrumentation. The engineer may also lead and mentor entry-level engineers and technicians.

Requirements

  • 14 years of experience with a bachelor's degree in STEM, 12 years with a master's degree in STEM, or 9 years with a Ph.D. in STEM.
  • At least 10 years of direct hands-on experience with test, instrumentation, and control engineering applications using Moog and/or MTS control systems.
  • Ability to obtain a U.S. Government Secret or Top Secret clearance.
  • Ability to obtain and maintain Program Access (PAR) within a reasonable period, as determined by the company to meet its business needs.
  • Proficiency in electromechanical and instrumentation engineering concepts and functions, including control-system setup and tuning and basic data-acquisition and signal-conditioning principles.
  • Familiarity with operating data-acquisition and load-control hardware and related instrumentation, including LVDTs, strain gages, string pots, and load cells.
  • Excellent communication skills and ability to work effectively within a diverse, cross-disciplinary team.

Nice To Haves

  • Experience with structural testing, load-control systems, and data-acquisition systems.
  • Experience in mechanical assembly and test, analog electronics, transducers, and strain-gage design and installation.
  • Hands-on skills with servo valves and pneumatic or hydraulic system design, setup, and checkout.
  • Ability to assess complex anomalies, apply critical thinking, and develop effective resolutions within a team.
  • Experience with Word, Excel, PowerPoint, Visio, AutoCAD, CATIA, and NX.
  • Proficiency with C syntax, LabVIEW, and VBA programming or scripting.
  • Experience applying electrical, electronic, and mechanical principles to components and systems, including assembly, analysis, documentation, developmental assemblies, and quality testing.
  • Experience supporting and participating in design, test, modification, fabrication, and assembly of prototype electromechanical systems.
  • Ability to immediately contribute to development, fabrication, and assembly of mechanical and electromechanical components, subassemblies, systems, and full-scale test stands.

Responsibilities

  • Manage the test lifecycle, including requirements derivation, fixture design, procurement and fabrication, test setup integration, planning, gate-review support, execution, and reporting.
  • Contribute to development, fabrication, and assembly of mechanical and electromechanical components, subassemblies, systems, and full-scale test stands.
  • Use load-control and data-acquisition systems to execute tests involving hundreds of load, position, and pressure control channels and feedback or data from thousands of sensors.
  • Design, set up, program, operate, and troubleshoot hardware and instrumentation; reduce data; prepare and present test reports; and maintain load-control and data-acquisition systems.
  • Plan and arrange the equipment and personnel needed to fulfill test requirements.
  • Co-author and publish test and instrumentation procedures, reports, and other documents needed to support the statement of work.
  • Participate in formal readiness reviews throughout testing.
  • Participate in post-test data evaluation, issue identification, and resolution.
  • Set up, install, and troubleshoot instrumentation such as load cells, LVDTs, strain gages, string pots, and thermocouples, and understand its functional concepts.
  • Collaborate across disciplines and personnel levels throughout structural testing, and potentially lead and mentor entry-level engineers and technicians.
