About The Position

Emergent is a leading public health company that delivers protective and life-saving solutions to communities around the world. The Sr Specialist, Environment, Health & Safety (EH&S) serves as the primary site subject matter expert and point of contact for all EH&S matters at the Canton, Massachusetts GMP vaccine drug substance (DS) manufacturing site. This role is responsible for ensuring full compliance with OSHA, EPA, MassDEP, CDC/NIH, and other applicable federal, state, and local regulations, permits, and registrations. The Specialist partners closely with site leadership, Manufacturing, Quality, Engineering, and external regulatory agencies to maintain audit readiness, proactively manage EH&S risks, and continuously strengthen a strong safety and environmental compliance culture aligned with cGMP expectations and business objectives.

Requirements

  • Bachelor’s degree in Environmental Health & Safety, Industrial Hygiene, Environmental Science, Chemistry, Biology, Engineering, or a related scientific or technical discipline.
  • Minimum of five (5) years of progressive EH&S experience in a regulated manufacturing environment; cGMP pharmaceutical, vaccine, biologics, or biotechnology manufacturing experience is strongly preferred.
  • Demonstrated hands-on experience with OSHA compliance programs, environmental permitting, inspections, and regulatory reporting at the site level.
  • Working knowledge of EH&S considerations specific to vaccine drug substance operations, including biosafety, chemical controls, exposure assessments, and high-hazard manufacturing activities.
  • Experience leading or supporting regulatory inspections and audits (OSHA, EPA, MassDEP, Fire Department, internal/corporate audits) and driving effective corrective actions.
  • Strong understanding of EH&S management systems and continuous improvement frameworks (e.g., ISO 14001, ISO 45001, ANSI Z10).
  • Excellent communication, influencing, and collaboration skills with the ability to engage effectively across all levels of the organization and with external stakeholders.
  • Proven ability to work independently, manage competing priorities, and apply sound judgment in a fast-paced manufacturing environment.

Nice To Haves

  • cGMP pharmaceutical, vaccine, biologics, or biotechnology manufacturing experience is strongly preferred.
  • Professional certifications such as CSP, CIH, CHMM, or equivalent are strongly preferred, or the ability to obtain certification within a reasonable timeframe.

Responsibilities

  • Serve as the site EH&S lead and technical authority, acting as the primary liaison with regulatory agencies, inspectors, auditors, and external service providers.
  • Ensure continuous compliance with OSHA, EPA, MassDEP, local fire department, and other applicable EH&S regulations, permits, licenses, and reporting requirements while always maintaining a state of inspection and audit readiness.
  • Develop, implement, and sustain site-specific EH&S programs, policies, procedures, and training aligned with cGMP manufacturing operations, biosafety, chemical safety, and environmental management requirements.
  • Lead EH&S risk assessments, Job Safety Analyses (JSAs), hazard evaluations, and routine inspections to proactively identify, mitigate, and eliminate safety and environmental risks in manufacturing, laboratory, warehouse, and utility operations.
  • Lead incident, near-miss, and unsafe condition investigations, including root cause analysis and the definition, implementation, and verification of corrective and preventive actions.
  • Monitor, trend, and analyze EH&S metrics and leading/lagging indicators; prepare reports and present actionable insights to site and functional leadership.
  • Ensure contractor and visitor safety compliance through oversight of contractor safety programs, permit-to-work systems (hot work, confined space, line break, etc.), orientations, and field verification.
  • Manage environmental compliance programs including hazardous waste, wastewater, air emissions, stormwater, chemical inventories, SDS management, and sustainability initiatives.
  • Oversee occupational health programs such as medical surveillance, respiratory protection, hearing conservation, ergonomics, immunizations, and emergency response planning.
  • Review, approve, and provide EH&S guidance for SOPs, change controls, deviations, and capital projects to ensure regulatory compliance and integration with GMP operations.
  • Support internal, corporate, customer, and regulatory audits and inspections, lead preparation, execution, response development, and follow-up actions.
  • Collaborate with corporate EH&S, Quality, Engineering, and Operations to align site practices with global standards, continuous improvement initiatives, and evolving regulatory expectations.
  • Serve as a key contributor or alternate responsible official for biosafety, select agent, and biosecurity programs as applicable to vaccine drug substance operations.
