About The Position

PayPal, Inc. seeks Sr Software Engineer in San Jose, CA. This role involves analyzing software product requirements and transforming them into scalable technical designs by collaborating with Technical Leads and Product Managers. The engineer will design and develop scalable software applications and features for backend systems utilizing experience with database design, including SQL and NoSQL databases, and experience with ORM tools. They will work with engineers, managers, product management, quality analysts, and operations teams to develop innovative software products and solutions that meet market needs. This includes researching, analyzing, designing, developing, and testing solutions to optimize system performance and reliability. The role also involves designing and implementing RESTful services using Java, developing automated tests, and delivering high-quality code in a continuous integration and delivery environment. Identifying and fixing performance, scalability, and other software live issues in a time-critical environment is also a key responsibility. Additionally, the engineer will mentor junior engineers, drive architecture discussions, produce well-documented design documents, and review code for quality. Partial telecommuting is permitted from within a commutable distance.

Requirements

Master’s degree, or foreign equivalent, in Computer Science, Engineering, or a closely related field plus two years of experience in the job offered or a related occupation.
OR Bachelor’s degree, or foreign equivalent, in Computer Science, Engineering, or a closely related field plus five years of experience in the job offered or a related occupation.
Java and Spring Boot — Experience designing and developing scalable backend systems using Java 8+ and Spring Boot, implementing microservices architectures, RESTful APIs, and modular backend services to handle high-performance enterprise applications. Skilled in Hibernate, Spring WebFlux, and Streams API for optimized code efficiency and maintainability (2 years)
Angular — Experience building responsive and dynamic front-end applications using Angular (versions 15–20), integrating Material UI, RxJS, NgRx state management, and advanced routing strategies. Expertise in creating reusable custom components, directives, and optimizing UI for real-time data visualization (2 years)
Databases – SQL & NoSQL — Experience designing and optimizing relational databases (MySQL, PostgreSQL, MSSQL) and NoSQL solutions (MongoDB, Cassandra). Skilled in schema design, writing complex SQL queries, stored procedures, and using BigQuery for large-scale analytics (2 years)
Cloud Platforms – GCP & AWS — Hands-on expertise deploying and managing scalable applications on Google Cloud Platform (GCP – Functions, Firebase, BigQuery, Pub/Sub, GKE, Cloud Run, App Engine) and AWS (EC2, CodePipeline, CodeBuild, Elastic Beanstalk). Skilled in implementing real-time event-driven workflows and CI/CD pipelines (2 years)
Apache Kafka & Pub/Sub — Experience developing and maintaining real-time data streaming pipelines using Apache Kafka and GCP Pub/Sub, ensuring high throughput and low latency. Skilled in designing event-driven architectures for large-scale scientific and forecasting applications (2 years)
Microservices & Containerization — Proven ability in designing and migrating applications from monolithic to microservices architectures, deployed using Docker and Kubernetes (GKE). Focus on scalability, modularity, and maintainability of cloud-native applications (2 years)
JavaScript, TypeScript, React — Experience developing interactive web applications using JavaScript/TypeScript and React, integrating with REST APIs, Firebase, and NgRx. Proficient in state management, dynamic rendering, and cross-platform optimization (2 years)
Data Visualization & Analytics — Experience integrating predictive analytics and data visualization tools into enterprise applications. Skilled in building real-time visualization tools (Web DVT) using Angular, D3.js, and ag-Grid for 15GB+ sequencing datasets (2 years)
DevOps & Agile Tools — Hands-on experience with CI/CD pipelines (AWS CodePipeline, GCP Cloud Build, Jenkins), Git, Jira, and Confluence. Familiar with Agile methodology, sprint planning, and stakeholder collaboration (2 years)
REST API Development — Experience designing, developing, and securing REST APIs with Spring Boot and Java, ensuring high availability, modularity, and scalability in enterprise-grade applications (2 years)

Responsibilities

Analyze software product requirements and transform them into scalable technical designs by collaborating with Technical Leads and Product Managers.

Work with engineers, managers, product management, quality analysts, and operations teams to develop innovative software products and solutions that meet market needs.
Research, analyze, design, develop, and test the solutions that are appropriate for the business and technology strategies to optimize system performance and reliability.
Design and implement RESTful services, focusing on scalability and reliability, using Java.
Develop automated tests and deliver high-quality software code to production within a short development cycle in the continuous integration and delivery environment.
Identify and fix performance, scalability, and other software live issues in a very time-critical environment.
Mentor junior engineers and drive architecture discussions, produce well-documented design documents and review code for quality.
