Sr Software Engineer I
About The Position
Symetra has an exciting new opportunity to join our Technical and Operations team as a Sr. Software Engineer supporting our Individual Life Insurance Division. We are looking for an experienced individual to join a team of software developers in support of our primary life insurance policy administration system. That system – CyberLife - is a legacy mainframe application that administers the large majority of our life insurance business. We have a very experienced staff of developers, but need additional capacity to develop new products, expand our capabilities, and move us toward a more digital, real-time processing system.
Requirements
- High school diploma (required)
- Experienced with CyberLife, Life70, or a similar mainframe-based policy administration system
- Collaborative team player who thrives in a supportive, Agile environment
- Strong decision-maker with the ability to solve complex technical and business problems
- Accountable and committed to delivering high‑quality, reliable solutions
- Comfortable taking ownership and helping define how your role contributes to overall team success
- Platforms: Mainframe, CICS, WebSphere, AWS
- Languages: COBOL, Assembler, MVS JCL
- Databases: VSAM, DB2, SQL
- Development Tools: TSO/ISPF, Micro Focus COBOL
- Web Services: SOAP and REST APIs
- Additional Technologies: ACORD, FTP, JSON, XML
Nice To Haves
- BA/BS in a related field preferred.
Responsibilities
- Participate in daily Agile/Kanban ceremonies
- Assess new requirements to provide high-level estimates
- Design and document system integrations and coding enhancements
- Develop secure, performant code following team best practices
- Execute unit testing and Support integration, acceptance and regression testing
- Coordinate the movement of code between our various technical environments
- Support resolution of critical production support issues
- Participate in design and code reviews
- Mentor team members as necessary providing subject matter expertise
- Building and maintaining APIs to expose real-time data.
