About The Position

Symetra has an exciting new opportunity to join our Technical and Operations team as a Sr. Software Engineer supporting our Individual Life Insurance Division. We are looking for an experienced individual to join a team of software developers in support of our primary life insurance policy administration system. That system – CyberLife - is a legacy mainframe application that administers the large majority of our life insurance business. We have a very experienced staff of developers, but need additional capacity to develop new products, expand our capabilities, and move us toward a more digital, real-time processing system.

Requirements

  • High school diploma (required)
  • Experienced with CyberLife, Life70, or a similar mainframe-based policy administration system
  • Collaborative team player who thrives in a supportive, Agile environment
  • Strong decision-maker with the ability to solve complex technical and business problems
  • Accountable and committed to delivering high‑quality, reliable solutions
  • Comfortable taking ownership and helping define how your role contributes to overall team success
  • Platforms: Mainframe, CICS, WebSphere, AWS
  • Languages: COBOL, Assembler, MVS JCL
  • Databases: VSAM, DB2, SQL
  • Development Tools: TSO/ISPF, Micro Focus COBOL
  • Web Services: SOAP and REST APIs
  • Additional Technologies: ACORD, FTP, JSON, XML

Nice To Haves

  • BA/BS in a related field preferred.

Responsibilities

  • Participate in daily Agile/Kanban ceremonies
  • Assess new requirements to provide high-level estimates
  • Design and document system integrations and coding enhancements
  • Develop secure, performant code following team best practices
  • Execute unit testing and Support integration, acceptance and regression testing
  • Coordinate the movement of code between our various technical environments
  • Support resolution of critical production support issues
  • Participate in design and code reviews
  • Mentor team members as necessary providing subject matter expertise
  • Building and maintaining APIs to expose real-time data.
