Sr. Software Engineer
About The Position
Ensora Health is seeking a Senior Software Engineer to help shape how the company builds software for mental and behavioral health practices. The role calls for deep PHP and object-oriented expertise, along with fresh approaches to using AI across the development lifecycle. The engineer will challenge existing practices, lead technical projects, work with leadership to define requirements, and help raise engineering standards across the team. The position includes designing and delivering features and services, improving PHP patterns and workflows, prototyping and operationalizing responsible AI-assisted development practices, shaping architecture, and resolving complex bugs and performance issues. The engineer will also advance automated testing and security, mentor colleagues, maintain technical documentation, and share knowledge through demos, learning sessions, and written guides.
Requirements
- At least 6 years of professional software development experience in an object-oriented language, with deep PHP expertise.
- Strong command of object-oriented programming principles, design patterns, and clean code practices.
- A track record of improving how a team builds software, not only what it builds.
- Hands-on experience using AI tools for coding, debugging, testing, or documentation, and good judgment about when to trust their output.
- Experience working in a Linux-based development environment.
- Proficiency with JavaScript, HTML, and CSS3.
- Solid experience with relational databases and SQL/MySQL.
- Working knowledge of system architecture, debugging strategies, and observability, including logs, metrics, and tracing.
- Demonstrated commitment to code quality, testing, and maintainable design.
- Strong communication skills, including the ability to explain technical tradeoffs to non-technical partners.
Nice To Haves
- Experience building AI-powered features or integrating LLM APIs into PHP applications.
- Experience creating repeatable AI workflows for a team, such as shared prompts, test generation, or automated review.
- Experience with Docker or containerized environments.
- Exposure to AWS or other cloud platforms.
- Experience in healthcare or other regulated software environments.
Responsibilities
- Lead the design, development, and deployment of features and services using object-oriented principles and modern PHP practices.
- Improve PHP patterns, tooling, and workflows to make software faster to ship, easier to maintain, and more secure.
- Explore and prototype AI uses in development, including code generation, refactoring, test creation, code review, and root-cause analysis, and turn effective approaches into repeatable team practices.
- Evaluate AI-assisted tools and establish responsible-use guidelines emphasizing human review, testing, and security.
- Work with leadership and product partners to define requirements and translate business needs into technical plans.
- Lead operational and technical projects from scoping and estimation through delivery.
- Shape architecture and design reusable, testable, scalable components.
- Diagnose and resolve complex bugs and performance issues using logs, metrics, and traces.
- Drive automated unit and integration testing and improve codebase test coverage.
- Lead by example in code reviews, provide constructive feedback, and mentor engineers at every level.
- Apply secure coding practices and address common web and application security risks.
- Keep technical documentation clear and current, including with the help of AI tools.
- Share knowledge through demos, lunch-and-learns, and written guides.
