Sr Software Engineer I - Enterprise Architecture

American Express•Phoenix, AZ
•$123,000 - $215,250

About The Position

The Senior Engineer I will help design, build, and operate enterprise integration and event-driven platforms that connect American Express systems at scale. This hands-on senior engineering role owns architecture solutions, tooling, and delivery for high-throughput, low-latency user interfaces, APIs, and backend databases in multi-region production environments, while setting technical direction for other engineers. Enterprise Architecture is part of American Express’s Core Technologies unit and enables the company’s architecture and technology strategy. Its pillars are Architecture as Code, Architecture as Design, Governance, and Colleague Enablement. The role works across enterprise platform engineering, modernization, resiliency, delivery pipelines, observability, and potential applications of AI/ML, while partnering with product, infrastructure, and business stakeholders.

Requirements

  • 10 or more years of software development experience.
  • Experience in full-stack development.
  • Experience with LLMs and prompt engineering.
  • Production cloud experience; AWS is preferred, including container orchestration, streaming and storage services, parameter and secret management, and infrastructure as code.
  • Hands-on experience with enterprise messaging and streaming platforms.
  • Extensive experience designing and implementing large-scale platforms with high resiliency, availability, and reliability.
  • Experience with CI/CD tools such as Harness, Jenkins, GitLab, or equivalent, and container platforms such as Docker, Kubernetes, ECS, or OpenShift.
  • Strong data skills, including relational databases and SQL/PLSQL, NoSQL stores, XML/XSD/XSLT, JSON schema design, and data-quality and reconciliation engineering.
  • Experience with observability and log analytics tools such as Dynatrace, Splunk, ELK, or equivalent.
  • Strong experience with high-throughput, high-performance applications.
  • Demonstrated ability to mentor engineers and lead technical work across distributed onsite/offshore teams.
  • Willingness to learn new technologies and use them to their optimal potential.
  • Ability to interpret technical and business objectives and challenges and articulate solutions.
  • Competencies in agile practices; porting/software configuration; programming languages and frameworks; business analysis; analytical thinking; and business product knowledge.
  • Hands-on experience in some or all of the listed technologies: JavaScript, TypeScript, ReactJS, NodeJS, NextJS, API design and development, backend development with relational and graph databases, Java, Python, Go, React, Envoy, gRPC, ProtoBuf, JSON, CouchBase, Cassandra, Redis, and cloud infrastructure and engineering.

Nice To Haves

  • A BS or MS degree in computer science, computer engineering, or another technical discipline is preferred.
  • Experience in process management, case management, or work management.
  • Experience in ML, Cognitive OCR, or agentic AI automations that drive cost savings.
  • Python experience for automation, data engineering, or ML.
  • Experience with microservices architectures and service mesh technologies.

Responsibilities

  • Design, build, and manage enterprise platforms and shared services for messaging, event distribution, and system-to-system integration.
  • Build operator-facing platform interfaces, including self-service onboarding portals, topic and schema management consoles, and flow-monitoring views; own the full stack from UI components through supporting APIs.
  • Architect high-throughput, low-latency event-driven systems using publish/subscribe, queue-based, and streaming patterns, and define topic taxonomies, message contracts, and canonical schemas.
  • Lead platform modernization and migration from legacy middleware and monolithic application servers to containerized, cloud-native microservices, using phased roadmaps, parallel-run validation, reconciliation, and zero-outage cutovers.
  • Engineer platform resiliency through multi-region active-active topologies, endpoint failover, dead-letter handling, duplicate detection, and failure isolation.
  • Own end-to-end delivery pipelines, including CI/CD, externalized configuration, release verification gates, and documented rollback runbooks.
  • Build production observability through throughput and latency dashboards, log analytics, alerting, and source-to-target data-quality and reconciliation checks.
  • Identify opportunities to apply LLMs and AI/ML to engineering tasks such as schema and mapping generation, anomaly and exception classification, and reconciliation summarization, with human review, accuracy baselines, and deterministic fallbacks.
  • Contribute as a core agile team member by writing code and unit tests and working with API specifications and automation.
  • Raise engineering standards through design reviews, HLD/LLD discipline, coding and review standards, test-coverage and security gates, and mentoring junior engineers.
  • Partner with product, infrastructure, and business stakeholders to translate objectives into technical designs and communicate trade-offs to engineering and senior leadership audiences.
