Sr Software Engineer I - Enterprise Architecture

American Express•Phoenix, AZ

About The Position

American Express is seeking a Senior Engineer I in Enterprise Architecture, an organization within the Core Technologies unit that enables the company’s architecture and technology strategy. The role is a hands-on senior engineering position focused on designing, building, and operating enterprise integration and event-driven platforms that connect American Express systems at scale. The engineer will own architecture solutions, tooling, and delivery for high-throughput, low-latency user interfaces, APIs, and backend databases in multi-region production environments, and set technical direction for other engineers. The position spans platform architecture and implementation, operator-facing full-stack tools, platform modernization, resilience, delivery pipelines, production observability, and potential applications of LLMs and AI/ML. The engineer will contribute as a core member of an agile team while raising engineering standards through design reviews, code and testing practices, security gates, and mentoring. They will partner with product, infrastructure, and business stakeholders to turn objectives into technical designs and communicate trade-offs to engineering teams and senior leadership.

Requirements

  • 10+ years of software development experience.
  • Experience in full-stack development.
  • Experience with LLMs and prompt engineering.
  • Production cloud experience; AWS is preferred, including container orchestration, streaming and storage services, parameter and secret management, and infrastructure as code.
  • Hands-on experience with enterprise messaging and streaming platforms.
  • Extensive experience designing and implementing large-scale platforms with high resiliency, availability, and reliability.
  • Experience with CI/CD tooling such as Harness, Jenkins, GitLab, or equivalent, and container platforms such as Docker, Kubernetes, ECS, or OpenShift.
  • Strong data skills, including relational databases and SQL/PLSQL, NoSQL stores, XML/XSD/XSLT and JSON schema design, and data-quality and reconciliation engineering.
  • Experience with observability and log analytics tooling such as Dynatrace, Splunk, ELK, or equivalent.
  • Strong experience with high-throughput, high-performance applications.
  • Demonstrated ability to mentor engineers and lead technical work across distributed onsite/offshore teams.
  • Willingness to learn new technologies and use them to their optimal potential.
  • Ability to interpret technical and business objectives and challenges and articulate solutions.
  • Technical, functional, leadership, and business competencies including agile practices, porting/software configuration, programming languages and frameworks, business analysis, analytical thinking, and business product knowledge.
  • Hands-on experience in some or all of the following is preferred: JavaScript, TypeScript, ReactJS, NodeJS, NextJS, API design and development, backend development on relational and graph databases, Java, Python, Go, React, Envoy, gRPC, ProtoBuf, JSON, CouchBase, Cassandra, Redis, and cloud infrastructure and engineering.

Nice To Haves

  • BS or MS degree in computer science, computer engineering, or another technical discipline.
  • Experience in process management, case management, or work management.
  • Experience in ML, Cognitive OCR, or agentic AI automations that drive cost savings.
  • Python for automation, data engineering, or ML.
  • Experience with microservices architectures and service mesh technologies.
  • Hands-on experience in some or all of the listed programming languages, frameworks, API technologies, databases, and cloud infrastructure technologies.

Responsibilities

  • Design, build, and manage enterprise platforms and shared technology services for messaging, event distribution, and system-to-system integration.
  • Build operator-facing platform tools, including self-service onboarding portals, topic and schema management consoles, and flow-monitoring views; own the stack from UI components through supporting APIs.
  • Architect high-throughput, low-latency event-driven systems using publish/subscribe, queue-based, and streaming patterns; define topic taxonomies, message contracts, and canonical schemas.
  • Lead platform modernization and migration from legacy middleware and monolithic application servers to containerized, cloud-native microservices, using phased roadmaps, parallel-run validation, reconciliation, and zero-outage cutovers.
  • Engineer platform resilience through multi-region active-active topologies, endpoint failover, dead-letter handling, duplicate detection, and failure isolation.
  • Own delivery pipelines, including CI/CD, externalized configuration, release-verification gates, and documented rollback runbooks.
  • Build production observability, including throughput and latency dashboards, log analytics, alerting, and data-quality and reconciliation checks between source and target streams.
  • Identify opportunities to apply LLMs and AI/ML to engineering problems such as schema and mapping generation, anomaly and exception classification, and reconciliation summarization, with human review, accuracy baselines, and deterministic fallbacks.
  • Write code and unit tests and work with API specifications and automation as part of an agile team.
  • Raise engineering standards through design reviews, HLD/LLD discipline, coding and review standards, test-coverage and security gates, and technical mentoring of junior engineers.
  • Partner with product, infrastructure, and business stakeholders to translate objectives into technical designs and communicate trade-offs to engineering and senior leadership audiences.

Benefits

  • Benefits, programs, and flexibility to support colleagues personally and professionally.
