About The Position

The Sr. Safety Advisor serves as a senior safety resource responsible for providing expert guidance, field leadership, and strategic support to promote a proactive safety culture and ensure compliance with company policies and applicable regulatory requirements. This position exercises independent judgment in identifying and mitigating safety risks, conducting complex investigations, and providing recommendations that may directly impact field operations. The Sr. Safety Advisor works closely with Operations, Project Management, Human Resources, Risk, and Safety leadership to identify hazards, improve safety performance, investigate incidents, and implement effective corrective actions. The position also provides mentorship to Safety Advisors and field leadership, supports safety program development, and serves as a senior safety representative on active construction projects.

Requirements

  • Bachelor’s degree in Occupational Safety, Environmental Health, Environmental Science, Construction Management, or a related field preferred.
  • 6–8 years of progressive safety experience, preferably in construction, utilities, pipeline, civil construction, or industrial operations.
  • In lieu of a degree, 10+ years of progressive safety experience with demonstrated technical leadership may be considered.
  • Demonstrated experience conducting safety inspections, audits, incident investigations, and Root Cause Analyses.
  • Experience providing safety guidance to field operations, supervisors, project managers, and senior leadership.
  • Experience developing and implementing safety programs, procedures, training, and corrective action plans.
  • Advanced knowledge of OSHA and Cal/OSHA regulations and construction safety requirements.
  • Strong knowledge of construction and utility safety practices, including excavation, trenching, confined space, traffic control, heavy equipment, and PPE.
  • Strong understanding of incident investigation and Root Cause Analysis methodologies.
  • Ability to interpret regulatory requirements and translate them into practical field procedures.
  • Ability to identify trends and develop effective risk mitigation strategies.

Responsibilities

  • Conduct jobsite inspections, safety audits, field observations, and hazard assessments across company operations.
  • Identify unsafe conditions and behaviors and provide immediate recommendations for corrective action.
  • Exercise independent judgment to address serious safety concerns and recommend or initiate work stoppages when imminent hazards are present.
  • Lead and conduct Root Cause Analyses (RCA) for incidents, near misses, injuries, property damage, and other safety events.
  • Prepare detailed investigation reports and develop corrective and preventive action plans.
  • Analyze safety trends, inspection results, incident data, and performance metrics to identify areas of risk and improvement.
  • Develop and present safety reports, dashboards, KPIs, and recommendations to Operations and leadership.
  • Support the development, implementation, and continuous improvement of safety policies, procedures, IIPP programs, and safe work practices.
  • Ensure compliance with OSHA, Cal/OSHA, and applicable federal, state, and local regulations.
  • Review and assist with the development of Job Hazard Analyses (JHAs), Job Safety Analyses (JSAs), and other risk assessment tools.
  • Provide safety guidance for high-risk activities, including excavation, trenching, confined space, traffic control, heavy equipment, and other construction operations.
  • Develop and deliver safety training, orientations, toolbox talks, and regulatory training.
  • Partner with Operations and field leadership to resolve safety concerns and implement sustainable corrective actions.
  • Mentor and provide technical guidance to Safety Advisors, supervisors, foremen, and field employees.
  • Support employee accountability and provide recommendations regarding safety-related disciplinary matters when appropriate.
  • Serve as a liaison between Safety, Operations, HR, Risk, project leadership, and regulatory agencies.
  • Respond to serious incidents and urgent safety matters, including after-hours, weekend, and emergency situations when required.
  • Promote employee engagement, safety ownership, and continuous improvement throughout field operations.
  • Perform other duties and responsibilities as assigned.
