About The Position

The Center for Advanced Research Computing (CARC) is searching for a 0.25 FTE Sr. Research Scientist 3 to work on the NSF Funded MESA Grant and other CARC projects. The selected individual researcher will serve as a recognized leader and authority in a high-performance cloud computing. They will be responsible for making authoritative decisions and recommendations to the CARC Director that have a major impact on extensive scientific research activities. The selected individual will need to exercise a high degree of creativity, foresight, and mature judgment in planning, organizing, and guiding extensive scientific research programs and activities of outstanding novelty and/or importance.

Requirements

  • Master's degree; at least 9 years of experience directly related to the duties and responsibilities specified.
  • Completed degree(s) from an accredited institution that are above the minimum education requirement may be substituted for experience on a year for year basis.

Nice To Haves

  • Understanding of Kubernetes, Terraform, Ansible, LiteLLM, and HuggingFace
  • Experience with national-scale research cyberinfrastructure platforms, particularly Jetstream-2 (NSF-funded research cloud) and/or CyVerse (national data management and analysis platform).
  • Demonstrated experience designing and deploying HPC or cloud infrastructure, including hybrid on-premise/cloud architectures.
  • Familiarity with ACCESS-CI resource allocation processes and integration workflows.
  • Experience supporting multi-stakeholder research computing environments, such as those spanning multiple colleges, departments, or externally funded programs.
  • Knowledge of or experience with containerization and orchestration technologies (e.g., Docker, Kubernetes, Singularity) as applied in research computing contexts.
  • Prior involvement in cyberinfrastructure acquisition planning, including participation in hardware procurement, system integration, or grant-supported infrastructure buildout.
  • Experience collaborating with or contributing to NSF-funded center or program activities (e.g., SW CACTI, MESA, or equivalent regional/national initiatives).

Responsibilities

  • Develops model concepts and approaches as an individual researcher and acts independently on technical matters.
  • Makes authoritative decisions and recommendations that have a major impact on the MESA grant.
  • Exercises a high degree of creativity, foresight, and mature judgment in planning, organizing, and guiding extensive collaboration in the MESA grant program.
  • Interprets, organizes, executes, and coordinates scientific research assignments for the MESA project.
  • Leads infrastructure design and supports cloud infrastructure integration with NSF Jetstream-2 and CyVerse, including architecture planning, deployment coordination, and ongoing operational support.
  • Leads infrastructure design and architecture for CyVerse deployment on CARC resources in support of the SW CACTI, MESA, and Arts & Sciences cyberinfrastructure hardware acquisition initiatives.
  • Prepares analyses, reports, and other documentation for publication; presents findings at local, national, and/or international meetings associated with MESA’s Grant Work.
  • Serves as a senior personnel on the $4.6 million dollar MESA grant.
  • Maintains currency of knowledge with respect to relevant state-of-the-art technology, equipment, and/or systems, with a particular emphasis in Cloud Computing.
  • Performs miscellaneous job-related duties as assigned.
