About The Position

This is a key, full-time remote position responsible for reinforcing-steel estimating and detailing, with periodic travel to project sites and company meetings. The successful candidate will serve as a technical resource to estimating, project management, and operations teams while helping establish the company’s estimating standards, production rates, historical cost database, and reinforcing-steel preconstruction process. The role reports to the President / Executive Management. The candidate will independently review structural drawings and specifications, perform reinforcing-steel takeoffs, develop labor and material pricing, understand detailing requirements, identify constructability issues, and provide management with reliable estimates of project cost and risk. Responsibilities also include preparing and reviewing placing drawings and bar lists, coordinating reinforcing steel with other disciplines, supporting project managers and field personnel, and developing standardized processes, quality controls, and department capabilities. The company ultimately expects the successful candidate to assume responsibility for its reinforcing-steel estimating/detailing function. Success in the first six months includes independently estimating major bids, identifying scope and constructability risks, producing reliable tonnage and labor estimates, supporting change-order pricing, establishing production benchmarks and a historical estimating database, improving estimating consistency and accuracy, and beginning to build a scalable estimating/detailing department. The role offers a highly competitive annual performance bonus based on estimating accuracy, gross-margin performance, successful project awards, department development, process improvements, project support, and overall company performance.

Requirements

  • At least 7 years of reinforcing-steel industry experience; 10 or more years is preferred.
  • Significant experience estimating reinforcing steel.
  • Significant experience detailing reinforcing steel or reviewing placing drawings.
  • Experience with large commercial, industrial, wastewater, infrastructure, heavy civil, or other concrete-intensive projects.
  • Experience estimating projects involving substantial reinforcing-steel tonnage.
  • Strong ability to read structural drawings and specifications.
  • Strong understanding of reinforcing-steel fabrication and field placement.

  • Estimate material, fabrication, detailing, placing labor, equipment, freight, and other project costs.
  • Establish project-specific labor hours and production assumptions.
  • Analyze bar sizes, tonnage, congestion, splice requirements, couplers, dowels, embeds, and other reinforcing requirements.
  • Review plans and specifications for scope gaps, discrepancies, constructability concerns, risks, and potential cost exposures.
  • Prepare conceptual, preliminary, and final estimates; assist management with bid strategy and selling price.
  • Solicit and evaluate material, fabrication, freight, and subcontractor pricing when required.
  • Maintain organized estimate documentation and assumptions.
  • Review structural drawings and specifications for detailing requirements; prepare and/or review reinforcing-steel placing drawings and bar lists.
  • Coordinate reinforcing steel with structural, architectural, and MEP requirements; identify conflicts, congestion, and constructability issues.
  • Review bar sizes, bends, laps, development lengths, couplers, dowels, and construction joints.
  • Coordinate reinforcing-steel RFIs, drawing revisions, and changes throughout projects.
  • Review shop and placing drawings for accuracy and constructability; work with project management and field personnel to resolve detailing issues.
  • Participate in project turnover from estimating to project management, preconstruction meetings, and project strategy discussions.
  • Establish project-specific production and labor assumptions; develop historical cost information and compare estimated with actual production and labor performance.
  • Assist project managers with change-order pricing and cost analysis, and provide technical support to field supervision when required.
  • Establish standardized estimating procedures, templates, checklists, production-rate databases, and quality-control procedures for takeoffs and placing drawings.
  • Help select and implement estimating/detailing software and mentor junior estimators and detailers.
  • Build and lead the company’s reinforcing-steel estimating/detailing function, eventually assuming responsibility for it.
