We are seeking an Sr R&D Swiss Machinist responsible for leading the day-to-day operations of the swiss machines in an R&D prototype shop while remaining an expert in manufacturing engineering prototypes, test fixtures, and existing parts to support product development. This role will manage the swiss department priorities, equipment readiness, materials, maintenance, and work execution. This individual will work from drawings, models, sketches, and verbal instructions while collaborating closely with engineering teams to create high-quality prototype components, assemblies, and fixtures.

Requirements

  • Demonstrated ability to manage shop operations, prioritize work, coordinate resources, and maintain a safe, organized, and responsive R&D prototype shop.
  • Advanced working knowledge and ability to operate Swiss-type CNC equipment.
  • Ability to operate manual and CNC equipment, as well as conventional metal cutting and plastic working equipment.
  • Working knowledge of stainless steel, titanium, UHMWPE plastic, ceramics, cold and hot rolled steel, brass, tool steels, aluminum, rubber, and castings.
  • Ability to utilize hand tools to assemble and/or modify parts and fixtures.
  • Capable of laying out work in the most cost-effective manner from the information available.
  • Ability to collaborate with engineering teams on product design and prototype development.
  • Strong attention to detail.
  • Strong attention to detail, ownership mindset, sound judgment, adaptability, and ability to work autonomously while supporting R&D decision-making and continuous improvement.
  • Ability to operate Swiss-type CNC equipment.

Nice To Haves

  • Technical degree, vocational training, Apprenticeship, or certification in machining or a related field preferred.

Responsibilities

  • Serves as the senior technical resource for swiss machining
  • Programs, performs setup, and operates Swiss CNC equipment
  • May operate manual equipment, including mills and lathes, hand tools, and finishing equipment such as bead blasters and sanders to create prototype parts, assemblies, and test fixturing.
  • May use CNC programming to create parts and fixtures.
  • Works from blueprints, sketches, prints, models, or verbal instructions and utilizes sophisticated metal and plastic equipment for fabrication.
  • Manages ordering of materials and working to a budget for swiss department
  • Manages equipment, including calibration or service coordination, maintenance planning, and replacement or upgrade recommendations.
  • May review CAD drawings and work with engineering on design for manufacturing (DFM) as part of the product development process.
  • May perform basic inspection on parts and fixtures.
  • May perform preventative maintenance and upkeep of equipment.
