About The Position

Consumers Energy is Michigan’s largest energy provider, serving 6.8 million residents across the Lower Peninsula. The Senior Program Engineer is a Project Engineer role within the HVD Engineering team, supporting project managers and leading engineering tasks for the Electric Distribution business area. This role focuses on projects involving protection and control, but may encompass any project within the HVD portfolio, ranging from small installations to large projects with new control houses. The Project Engineer ensures technical project scope is coordinated with internal and external engineers, vendors, fabricators, and contractors. The position involves multiple assignments requiring standard engineering techniques and procedures. The Senior Program Engineer is responsible for the engineering and technical disciplines needed to complete a project, overseeing multiple initiatives, planning projects, establishing criteria, coordinating reviews, and ensuring proper implementation. This role also oversees and determines staffing needs for contracted staff augmented project engineers, is responsible for their deliverables, and approves their timesheets, with assistance from the senior engineering manager.

Requirements

  • Analytical and problem-solving skills.
  • Excellent knowledge of design and visualizations software such as MicroStation.
  • Proficient in MS Office, with aptitude for learning new software.
  • Written and verbal communication skills.
  • Organizational skills and attention to detail.
  • Familiarity with rules, regulations, best practices and performance standards.
  • Understanding and experience in contract management.
  • Experience in the management of engineering contracts and engineering deliverables.
  • Bachelor’s degree in engineering from an ABET accredited program with four (4) or more years of experience in a program engineer capacity.
  • OR Bachelor’s degree in engineering from a non-ABET accredited program plus a Professional Engineering (PE) license with four (4) or more years of experience in a program engineer capacity.

Nice To Haves

  • Knowledge of Project Management Information Systems such as Unifier and Document Control tools such as Project Wise is not a requirement but a plus.
  • Knowledge of Project Management principles and skills is a plus.
  • An Electrical Engineering background is preferred, but not required.

Responsibilities

  • Prepare, schedule, coordinate and monitor the assigned engineering projects.
  • Build strong partnerships with business partners and deeply understand their business goals.
  • Interact with clients, interpreting their needs and requirements, and representing them in the field.
  • Monitor compliance to applicable codes, practices, QA/QC policies, performance standards and specifications.
  • Support project delivery by helping balance team performance with tight deadlines.
  • Review engineering deliverables and initiate appropriate corrective actions.
  • Review the engineering tasks and initiate the necessary corrective actions.
  • Provide assistance and technical support to project managers and other project participants and collaborate with senior engineers to create more efficient project methods and to maintain the project’s profitability.
  • Perform quality control tasks on budgets, schedules, plans, and personnel performance and reporting on the project's status.
  • Offer technical assistance and support to project managers and other team participants.
  • Review engineering deliverables and tasks, initiating appropriate corrective actions as needed to ensure project quality and accuracy.
  • Support Agile project delivery by helping balance team performance with strict deadlines.
  • Develop specifications for required project equipment.
  • Oversee and determine staffing needs for contracted staff augmented project engineers.
  • Approve the timesheets of the staff augmented project engineers.
