Sr. Process Engineer

Boston Scientific•Maple Grove, MN
•$85,000 - $161,500•Onsite

About The Position

The Sr. Process Engineer provides technical leadership and direction for process technology teams, promoting consistency across franchises and project teams and applying organizational best practices. The role serves as a materials science expert, with deep knowledge of polymers and material–process–performance relationships, and helps define next-generation materials and process technologies to support product development and improve product cost margins. The position requires expertise in polymer material selection and characterization, as well as development of complex polymer assembly and bonding processes. The engineer influences product design early in development by guiding material selection, design for manufacturability, and concepts that enable robust, reliable integrated finished devices. Success requires influencing across business units and functions. This role follows an onsite work model, with employees required to work in the local office five days per week. Relocation assistance and employment visa sponsorship are not available. The position is safety-sensitive and requires a prohibited substance test.

Requirements

  • Bachelor’s degree in Materials Science, Polymer Science/Engineering, Chemical Engineering, or a related engineering discipline.
  • Minimum of 5 years of related engineering experience.

Nice To Haves

  • Advanced degree (MS or PhD) in Materials Science and Engineering, Polymer Science/Engineering, or a related area of focus.
  • Strong polymer materials background, including material selection, characterization, and processing.
  • Demonstrated ability to influence product design through materials expertise.
  • Demonstrated cross-functional teamwork in a technically demanding environment.
  • Experience leading team members.
  • Medical device design and process development experience.

Responsibilities

  • Serve as a materials science resource and expert, setting technical direction for materials and process technology for the function and/or franchise.
  • Partner with R&D and product design teams early in development to influence design decisions, material selection, and design for manufacturability.
  • Investigate materials and process needs for future product designs and develop technology plans to support development teams, providing business rationale for proposed research or technology investments.
  • Lead polymer material characterization and failure analysis to understand structure–property–process relationships and guide design and process decisions.
  • Develop and optimize complex polymer assembly and bonding processes for integrated finished devices.
  • Apply relevant published work in materials and polymer science to advanced engineering problems, or build relationships with suppliers, academia, and other external parties to accomplish this.
  • Evaluate materials and process technologies at other Boston Scientific sites and externally, leverage applicable technologies, and serve as a key contact for materials-related technical queries from other sites.
  • Set direction for education efforts and mentoring in materials science and polymer processing.
  • Contribute to technical review teams by providing materials-related risk assessments and recommendations.
  • Review and assess materials and processes for potential patent opportunities and generate intellectual property as applicable.
