Sr. Principal Hyperscale Rack Engineer

Jabil•Austin, TX
•$156,400 - $281,500

About The Position

Jabil is seeking a technically authoritative, customer-facing Sr. Principal Hyperscale Rack Engineer within its Intelligent Infrastructure Segment. The role leads the architecture, integration, and strategic direction of advanced air- and liquid-cooled server and network rack solutions for large-scale hyperscale deployments. The position translates customer requirements into scalable, manufacturable, and commercially viable rack systems, working across engineering, customer engagement, and program execution. The engineer owns end-to-end rack architecture across mechanical, power, thermal, electrical, networking, and software domains, and serves as a technical leader in complex customer engagements and programs. The work spans requirements definition, design decisions, program execution from concept through production, prototype and production readiness, compliance, and continuous design refinement based on deployment feedback. The role also mentors engineers and supports cross-functional alignment among customers, engineering, supply chain, manufacturing, program teams, executives, and compliance personnel. The position requires a bachelor's degree in a relevant engineering discipline, at least 10 years of engineering, systems integration, or data center hardware design experience, and at least three years each of rack-level solution design and switch/server integration experience. Domestic and international travel of up to 30% is required. The role is eligible for a performance-based short-term incentive. The stated pay range is $156,400–$281,500; the actual offer depends on job-related factors including qualifications, experience, location, education, market data, and internal equity.

  • Minimum of 3 years of switch/server (L10) experience, including compute, storage, or networking hardware integration.
  • Proven ability to develop and execute complex rack solutions for hyperscale or large-scale data center environments, managing 12–18 month lifecycles and portfolios valued at hundreds of millions of dollars.
  • Familiarity with EIA, ORV3, and OCP industry standards and global power architectures.
  • Demonstrated experience working directly with customers in technically and commercially sensitive environments.
  • Strong program execution background, including schedule ownership, risk management, and cross-functional leadership.
  • Excellent communication and cross-functional collaboration skills.
  • Strong understanding of mechanical systems, integration strategies, and program management.
  • Hands-on experience with prototype fabrication and testing, including mechanical S&V, software burn-in, and test validation.
  • Excellent interpersonal and communication skills.
  • Ability to assess projects, articulate risks, and develop project milestones.
  • Creative, self-motivated, accountable, and team-oriented approach.
  • Ability to work independently with minimal oversight.
  • Skill in writing reports, business correspondence, and procedural guides.
  • Ability to present information effectively and respond to management, clients, and public queries.
  • Ability to influence others and share best practices.
  • Familiarity with stage-gate processes in project lifecycle management (PLM).
  • Ability to coach and mentor less experienced engineers.
  • Demonstrated success leading in a highly matrixed environment and driving cross-functional alignment and execution without direct reporting authority.
  • Ability to travel domestically and internationally up to 30%.

Nice To Haves

  • Master's degree in Mechanical Engineering, Electrical Engineering, Systems Engineering, or a related field.
  • Extensive experience with liquid-cooled rack deployments in hyperscale or AI/ML infrastructure environments.
  • Proficiency with CAD tools such as SolidWorks, Creo/Pro-E, or Inventor and FEA software such as ANSYS or Abaqus.
  • Experience working with global suppliers and contract manufacturers.
  • High-level knowledge of fluid dynamics, pressure-drop calculations, and pipe sizing for glycol-based systems.
  • Proven experience driving compliance and validation for rack configurations, including regulatory standards, safety requirements, and mechanical integrity testing for shock, vibration, and transit durability.

Responsibilities

  • Serve as lead architect and development manager for complex rack-level solutions, owning system-level design decisions across mechanical, electrical, power, thermal, networking, and software integration.
  • Lead customer-facing technical engagements from RFI/RFQ through first hardware delivery, including design reviews, trade-off discussions, and executive-level conversations.
  • Translate ambiguous or evolving customer requirements into program frameworks aligned with customer expectations and engineering execution.
  • Manage customer expectations, push back when requirements create risk or inefficiency, and address technical and cost-related questions.
  • Drive cross-functional alignment across executives, engineering, supply chain, manufacturing, and program teams, with emphasis on BOM management and scheduling.
  • Own rack-level architecture, including power distribution, air- and liquid-cooling strategies, cable routing, serviceability, and manufacturability.
  • Provide technical guidance on rack infrastructure such as PDUs, busbars, CDUs, manifolds, quick disconnects, airflow design, and high-density compute integration.
  • Oversee architecture decisions affecting performance, cost, scalability, and deployment efficiency.
  • Drive program execution from concept through production, defining, tracking, and meeting schedules.
  • Define milestones, identify and escalate risks, and hold cross-functional teams accountable for commitments.
  • Support internal readiness calls from initial NPI scoping through prototyping and mass production, ensuring power, thermal, and software systems operate together.
  • Partner with customers and internal stakeholders to refine designs based on deployment feedback and operational learnings.
  • Collaborate with compliance and certification teams to ensure mechanical designs meet global regulatory requirements, including UL, CE, ISTA, and ASTM.
  • Mentor and guide engineers across disciplines and establish best practices in rack system architecture and integration.
  • Account for rack installation constraints, maintenance access, and serviceability in rack mechanical infrastructure.
  • Conduct root cause analysis and corrective actions for mechanical failures or field issues.
  • Perform other duties and responsibilities as assigned.
