Henry Crown & Company/CC Industries is a Chicago-based, privately-held company that manages business, philanthropic, and family interests on behalf of a multi-generational family. The business ventures fall into broadly-defined categories: wholly-owned operating companies, public and private equity investments, and real estate. Longview Asset Management is a part of the HCC portfolio as a Chicago-based, multi-strategy investment firm which invests for individuals, trusts, and foundations. The firm uses intensive industry and company research to manage its three principal investment strategies: constructing portfolios of publicly traded securities, making equity investments in private companies, and purchasing limited partnership interests in private equity funds and hedge funds operated by independent investment firms. The Senior Primary Research Associate leads and controls primary due diligence projects that play a significant role in Longview’s decisions on investment opportunities. The Senior Associate independently recruits and extensively interviews experts on companies and industries of interest to Longview. The Senior Associate produces detailed interview transcripts and research reports and orally presents findings to Longview’s leadership team as a key part of the investment decision process. This individual will also spearhead team due-diligence projects, incorporating the contributions of a primary research associate and other LAM staff members.

Requirements

  • Bachelor’s Degree in Communications, Journalism, Finance or related field.
  • 7 years of experience in business journalism or a research field.
  • Extensive familiarity with business concepts and fundamentals, Securities and Exchange Commission and other public filings, company earnings statements and management presentations, legal and regulatory documents, and the workings of public and private companies.
  • Oral and written communication, editing, interview preparation, interviewing, note-taking, transcription, analysis of interviews and legal and regulatory documents, report writing.
  • Familiarity with financial statements, Boolean search processes, PACER and other court-filings software, record management software, LinkedIn, and contact databases such as Apollo and RocketReach.
  • Analytical and creative thinking, problem solving, project management and leadership, organization, exhibiting professional behavior.

Responsibilities

  • Meet with securities analysts to define individual project goals and plans.
  • Read sell-side research, public filings, news articles and other background information prior to starting projects.
  • Investigate legal and regulatory documents related to investment targets.
  • Independently conduct online research to build comprehensive and complete lists of subject matter experts on specific companies, industries, or technologies for each project, without the need for supervision.
  • Independently create extensive question lists for interviews.
  • Independently contact and recruit experts to be interviewed.
  • Frequently follow up with expert prospects by email and phone.
  • Independently conduct all interviews for projects or work in tandem with securities analysts to conduct joint interviews.
  • Take full, high-quality Q&A notes of expert interviews with or without the use of a tape recorder in all interview situations.
  • Draft complete interview transcripts that are grammatically correct and have proper spelling and punctuation and require no editorial support.
  • Independently summarize interviews without the need for substantial editing.
  • Generate substantive and comprehensive reports at the end of projects, summarizing the major conclusions reached, with proper grammar, spelling and punctuation, and little to no required editing by a manager.
  • Offer suggestions to leadership for further qualitative research to be conducted at the end of projects.
  • Meet with analysts to orally present and discuss project findings and to share the researcher’s own opinions with analysts and leadership.
  • Orally present project conclusions as part of stock pitches when appropriate at Longview weekly staff meetings.
  • Help develop strategies to expedite the recruitment of experts for due diligence projects.
  • Coordinate any payments to experts and forward invoices as applicable.
  • Work closely with third-party expert services to coordinate and help facilitate expert calls using those services.
  • Ability to travel up to 10% of the time.
  • Attend industry conferences and independently generate substantive interviews and report key takeaways from the conference within 1-2 days of the event’s conclusion.
