Sr. Opto-Mechanical Engineer

Sierra Lobo•Pasadena, CA

About The Position

Sierra Lobo’s Pasadena office supports JPL and commercial aerospace customers. The team specializes in the opto-mechanical design, analysis, test, and fabrication of spaceflight imaging instruments, including hyperspectral imagers and other airborne and spaceflight optical instruments. Sierra Lobo is seeking an opto-mechanical engineer to join its growing team. The role involves taking designs from requirements definition through drawing generation, fabrication, assembly, and test. It also includes detailed structural analysis of components and assemblies, with first-order hand calculations and finite element analyses, and applying mechanical and opto-mechanical design principles and standards.

Requirements

  • Bachelor’s or master’s degree in Mechanical Engineering or a similar field.
  • 10–15 years of industry experience.
  • Experience using Siemens NX CAD.
  • Experience generating mechanical drawings using GD&T principles.
  • Experience performing detailed structural analysis of components and assemblies, including first-order hand calculations and finite element analyses.
  • Broad understanding of mechanical design principles and their application.
  • Ability and experience taking designs from requirements definition through drawing generation, fabrication, assembly, and test.
  • Broad understanding of applicable industry and/or academic practices and standards in opto-mechanical systems, including mounting optical elements and optical-instrument structural design.
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills.
  • Ability to work in a customer-focused team environment.

Nice To Haves

  • Familiarity with optical design tools such as Zemax or FRED.
  • Integration and test experience with spaceflight hardware.

Responsibilities

  • Design, analyze, test, and support fabrication of opto-mechanical systems for spaceflight imaging instruments.
  • Perform detailed structural analysis of components and assemblies, including first-order hand calculations and finite element analyses.
  • Develop designs from requirements definition through drawing generation, fabrication, assembly, and test.
  • Apply industry and/or academic practices and standards for opto-mechanical systems, including optical-element mounting and optical-instrument structural design.
