Staff Opto-Mechanical Engineer

Carbon•Sunnyvale, CA
•$187,400 - $273,600•Hybrid

About The Position

As an optomechanical engineer on Carbon’s Hardware Team, you will design, build, and sustain additive manufacturing solutions. The role focuses on developing and integrating optical solutions for new architectures and supporting the continuous production of shipped systems. You will engage with vendors to specify, source, and validate solutions end to end. The Hardware Team leads new product introduction with Manufacturing, develops product variations and features, and adapts products for long-term production in a dynamic manufacturing environment. Working with a cross-functional team, you will develop practical solutions to evolving challenges and help deliver products that satisfy customers. This is an in-office role based at Carbon’s Sunnyvale, California headquarters, with an expectation of 4 to 5 days onsite. Flexible work from home is allowed and expected during different project phases.

Requirements

  • Bachelor’s degree in Mechanical Engineering or a related technical discipline.
  • At least 3 years of experience working on optomechanical designs and subsystems.
  • Strong mechanical engineering background, fluency in CAD, and a solid understanding of dimensioning and tolerancing principles.
  • Proficiency in SolidWorks, Onshape, or similar CAD software.
  • Experience developing specifications for optical, optomechanical, or optoelectronic assemblies.
  • Understanding of product quality metrics and methods, including GD&T, DFMEA, and Statistical Process Control (SPC).
  • Knowledge of precision optical and mechanical alignment tools and techniques.
  • Submit a portfolio along with the resume.

Nice To Haves

  • Demonstrated experience developing systems and processes for optical alignment and metrology for optical elements and optical systems.
  • Scripting and UI development expertise for automated alignment tools using motion control, sensors, and/or machine vision components.
  • Proficiency in MATLAB, LabVIEW, or Python.
  • Experience in a production environment and comfort working with technicians on the manufacturing floor and in the lab.

Responsibilities

  • Work with Mechanical, Electrical, and Systems Engineering to conceptualize optomechanical designs and maintain existing subassemblies, including building and testing optical equipment in the lab.
  • Collaborate with Operations teams, including Sourcing, Planning, Quality, Manufacturing, Production, and Field Service, to support released products, maintain production, and troubleshoot assembly and field issues; this may involve communicating directly with vendors on technical issues.
  • Perform engineering analyses of parts and assemblies, including optical mounting strategies, tolerances, thermal behavior, stress, fatigue, lifetime, manufacturability, failure modes, and cost.
  • Work with cross-functional teams to specify system requirements, implement designs, and troubleshoot issues.
  • Create and maintain documentation, such as drawings and ECOs, to support effective knowledge transfer across the company.
