About The Position

Amazon Leo is Amazon’s low Earth orbit satellite network, aiming to deliver fast, reliable internet connectivity to customers beyond the reach of existing networks. This role is for a Sr Opto Mechanical Engineer responsible for manufacturing and test development for a key module on next-generation spacecraft. The engineer will be the leading technical voice for a team of manufacturing engineers, solving complex technical problems related to an ultra-high-performing optical, electrical, and mechatronic module. This role serves as a critical link between design/development, factory operations, quality engineering, and program management, driving manufacturing processes from introduction to full-rate production. The engineer will leverage expertise in optical test design to collaborate with development teams on future system iterations and production test systems. The role involves solving industrial challenges related to production velocity, quality, and cost-competitiveness, while also driving production capacity increases through capital investment for scaling and automation.

Requirements

  • Experience in developing functional specifications, design verification plans and functional test procedures
  • Degree in Mechanical Engineering, Optical Engineering, Physics, Optics/Optical Sciences OR related field OR equivalent work experience
  • Experience in design of opto-mechanical systems, familiar with optics mounting and optical alignment
  • Experience in developing functional specifications, design verification plans and functional test procedures
  • Familiarity New Product Introduction
  • 5+ years of experience in mechanical systems design and development using at least one standard commercial CAD software package (Solidworks, Creo, etc) including experience with GD&T, FEA and quality detail drawing documentation
  • Proficient with optical design principles and ray tracing
  • Must be a U.S. citizen or national, U.S. permanent resident (i.e., current Green Card holder), or lawfully admitted into the U.S. as a refugee or granted asylum.

Nice To Haves

  • Master's degree in electrical engineering, computer engineering, or equivalent
  • Experience working with interdisciplinary teams to execute product design from concept to production
  • Experience with the project management of technical projects
  • Understanding of optical alignment techniques and experience with design of laser systems and alignment procedures
  • Experience with design tools and fixtures to aid in alignment, fabrication, gluing, and assembly of lasers, interferometers, and optical components

Responsibilities

  • Serve as primary technical interface to development team, participating as the lead technical voice from the factory in Design Reviews, key technical escalations, and new product development activities.
  • Design and analyze of optical systems, including opto-mechanical mounting.
  • Review designs from design engineer for performance, DFM, FMEA, etc.
  • Align laser and/or optical systems.
  • Measure laser properties and optical performance to ensure product specifications are met.
  • Collaborate with the optical engineering and system engineering leads with the opto-mechanical system design.
  • Drive full documentation of mechanical design including BOM, drawings and procedures.
