About The Position

Cox Enterprises is seeking a Senior Mobile React Native Engineer for the Atlanta Journal-Constitution’s Mobile Engineering team. The role will help shape the AJC mobile app and support a high-volume publishing platform, complex content management system migrations, and performance needs in a newsroom environment. It is based in Atlanta, Georgia, and uses a hybrid work arrangement, with the ability to work remotely part of the week. The engineer will develop and maintain the AJC app across iOS and Android, contribute to Payload CMS integration and migration work, implement analytics and tracking, and integrate media asset management systems. The position also includes building mobile web experiences with Next.js and React Native, architecting scalable front-end systems, optimizing performance and accessibility, and collaborating with product, design, backend engineering, and newsroom teams. The role owns technical decisions for mobile web architecture, tooling, and deployment pipelines, and includes mentoring other engineers and maintaining engineering standards.

Requirements

Must currently reside within commuting distance of midtown Atlanta and be comfortable with a hybrid schedule.
Must be authorized to work in the United States for any employer, without current or future sponsorship; OPT, CPT, STEM/OPT, and visa sponsorship are not available.
Bachelor’s degree.
At least 4 years of professional mobile development experience, including at least 2 years using React Native in production.
Strong proficiency in JavaScript/TypeScript and modern development practices.
Experience designing and maintaining mobile web experiences with Next.js and React Native.
Experience with SSR, SSG, and ISR.
Experience optimizing mobile performance, including Core Web Vitals, load times, bundle size, and offline behavior.
Ability to build responsive, accessible interfaces across iOS and Android browsers and devices.
Experience collaborating with designers, product managers, and backend engineers to deliver polished features.
Ability to write clean, testable, well-documented code and contribute to code reviews and engineering standards.
Experience mentoring junior and mid-level engineers.
Experience owning technical decisions for mobile web architecture, tooling, and deployment pipelines.
Experience monitoring production performance and resolving issues.
Experience implementing analytics and tracking solutions in mobile applications.
Working knowledge of asset management systems and media handling in publishing contexts.
Knowledge of native modules and React Native bridge development.
Strong problem-solving skills and ability to work in fast-paced, deadline-driven newsroom environments.

Responsibilities

Develop and maintain the AJC mobile app using React Native for high performance and a strong user experience across iOS and Android.
Participate in CMS integrations, including Payload CMS implementation and complex migration projects.
Implement and maintain website tracking, analytics integration, and user behavior monitoring systems.
Integrate asset management systems to handle images, videos, and other multimedia content in a newsroom environment.
Collaborate with newsroom teams to understand publishing workflows and translate requirements into technical solutions.
Use Claude Code and AI-assisted development tools to accelerate development and improve code quality.
Work with product, design, backend engineering, and newsroom stakeholders.
Design, build, and maintain high-performance mobile web experiences using Next.js and React Native.
Architect scalable front-end systems using server-side rendering (SSR), static site generation (SSG), and incremental static regeneration (ISR).
Optimize mobile performance, including Core Web Vitals, load times, bundle size, and offline behavior.
Build responsive, accessible interfaces for iOS and Android browsers and devices.
Write clean, testable, well-documented code and contribute to code reviews and engineering standards.
Mentor junior and mid-level engineers and help raise the team’s technical bar.
Own technical decisions for mobile web architecture, tooling, and deployment pipelines.
Monitor production performance and resolve issues quickly.
