About The Position

Cox Enterprises is seeking a Senior Mobile React Native Engineer for the Atlanta Journal-Constitution’s Mobile Engineering team. The role will help shape the AJC mobile app, a high-volume publishing platform, through mobile development, CMS migrations, and performance optimization in a newsroom environment. The position is based in Atlanta, Georgia, and has a hybrid work arrangement with the ability to work remotely part of the week. The engineer will develop and maintain the AJC app for iOS and Android, participate in Payload CMS integration and migration projects, and implement analytics, tracking, and media asset management systems. The role works closely with newsroom teams and cross-functional partners, and uses Claude Code and other AI-assisted development tools to improve development speed and code quality. The position also includes owning mobile web architecture and deployment decisions, monitoring production performance, resolving issues, and mentoring other engineers.

Requirements

Must currently reside within a commutable distance of midtown Atlanta and be comfortable with a hybrid schedule.
Must be currently authorized to work in the United States for any employer without current or future sponsorship; OPT, CPT, STEM/OPT, and visa sponsorship are not available.
Bachelor’s degree.
At least 4 years of professional mobile development experience, including at least 2 years using React Native in production.
Strong proficiency in JavaScript/TypeScript and modern development practices.
Experience with mobile performance optimization, including Core Web Vitals, load times, bundle size, and offline behavior.
Ability to build responsive, accessible interfaces across iOS and Android browsers and devices.
Experience collaborating with designers, product managers, and backend engineers to deliver features.
Experience writing testable, documented code and contributing to code reviews and engineering standards.
Experience mentoring junior and mid-level engineers.
Experience implementing analytics and tracking solutions in mobile applications.
Working knowledge of asset management systems and media handling in publishing contexts.
Knowledge of native modules and React Native bridge development.
Strong problem-solving skills and ability to work in a fast-paced, deadline-driven newsroom environment.

Responsibilities

Develop and maintain the AJC mobile app using React Native, ensuring high performance and a strong user experience across iOS and Android.
Participate in CMS integrations, including Payload CMS implementation and complex migration projects.
Implement and maintain website tracking, analytics integrations, and user behavior monitoring systems.
Integrate asset management systems for handling images, video, and other multimedia content in a newsroom environment.
Collaborate with newsroom teams to understand publishing workflows and translate requirements into technical solutions.
Use Claude Code and AI-assisted development tools to accelerate development and improve code quality.
Work with product, design, backend engineering, and newsroom stakeholders.
Design, build, and maintain high-performance mobile web experiences using Next.js and React Native.
Architect scalable front-end systems using server-side rendering, static site generation, and incremental static regeneration.
Optimize mobile performance, including Core Web Vitals, load times, bundle size, and offline behavior.
Build responsive, accessible interfaces for iOS and Android browsers and devices.
Write clean, testable, well-documented code and contribute to code reviews and engineering standards.
Mentor junior and mid-level engineers and help raise the team’s technical bar.
Own technical decisions for mobile web architecture, tooling, and deployment pipelines.
Monitor production performance and resolve issues quickly.
