Position Overview J&J’s MedTech Clinical Development Category is a complex global category with annual spend >$85MM USD. The majority of the spend is concentrated in the following subcategories: 1) Regulatory Affairs, 2) Flexible Clinical/Insourced Staffing (Flex Program), 3) Programmatic CRO & ARO, 4) Biostats, Programming, and Medical Writing, and 5) Data Management. The category delivers value through cost optimization, compliance, risk management, sustainability, innovation, supplier performance, and business enablement. This role will oversee the development and execution of category strategies aligned with business needs. The Senior Manager will own key supplier relationships, drive cost savings and value creation, ensure compliance with MedTech Procurement standards, processes, tools, and best practices, and deliver against MedTech Procurement performance targets. The role will ensure functional alignment and excellence in procurement strategy, business planning, performance management, stakeholder engagement, and change management.

Requirements

  • Demonstrated skills in Strategic Procurement, Sourcing, Category Management, and Supplier Management.
  • Proven track record of developing and executing category strategies that deliver cost savings, mitigate risk, and improve supplier performance.
  • Strong understanding of sourcing processes, contract lifecycle management, and supplier governance across diverse indirect spend areas.
  • Exceptional stakeholder engagement and influencing skills, with the ability to partner effectively with internal functions such as Research & Development, Legal, Finance.
  • Excellent negotiation skills, with experience managing complex supplier relationships and high-value contracts.
  • Ability to engage, interact and negotiate value enhancing relationships with suppliers.
  • Strong business acumen with the ability to align sourcing initiatives to broader organizational goals.
  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills, including the ability to present to and influence senior leadership.
  • Proficiency with procurement systems (e.g., SAP, Ariba) and comfort working with data in Excel; familiarity with analytics tools like Power BI or Tableau is a plus.
  • Strong business and finance acumen, deep understanding of managing for impact in complex matrix environment
  • Proven ability to lead, influence, partner on & shape projects with / without direct team / authority
  • Minimum 8 years of relevant professional experience, preferably inside and outside Procurement and in different J&J sectors or industries
  • Relevant degree (e.g. Business, Engineering, Science), preferably complemented by top-notch MBA or other Master’s qualification

Responsibilities

  • Lead the strategy and execution of MedTech Clinical Development category and related sub-categories/commodities.
  • Design forward-looking strategies that advance business priorities, balancing cost, growth enablement, risk, speed, and sustainability.
  • Collaborate with senior business leaders to ensure Procurement strategies meet business needs, are socialized effectively, and are adopted within the business.
  • Build trusted relationships with Clinical, R&D, Finance, Legal, and other cross-functional stakeholders to align procurement strategies with business priorities and operating plans.
  • Develop and leverage deep category expertise to proactively identify and implement value-creation opportunities, including cost savings, cost avoidance, demand management, supplier optimization, and process improvement.
  • Establish and maintain a robust value delivery pipeline.
  • Lead and provide oversight to the Agile Team and Global Services Team on the operational execution of global category strategies and their implementation, including sourcing events and negotiations.
  • Lead complex, high-stakes supplier negotiations within the category to deliver value creation, risk mitigation, compliance, service quality, and strong commercial outcomes.
  • Support contract lifecycle management for owned categories, including contract negotiations, renewals, amendments, governance, and compliance with procurement and business requirements.
  • Lead the supplier relationship management process for key suppliers, ensuring supplier performance, speed-to-value, risk management, governance, and continuous improvement.
  • Build strategic supplier partnerships that unlock innovation, enable commercial solutions, and bring measurable value to the organization.
  • Uphold ethical sourcing, data privacy, anti-bribery/anti-corruption standards, and contracting governance; anticipate and address regional risks proactively.
  • Identify critical industry market and supply trends and embed them into category strategies to maintain sustainable relevance for MedTech.
  • Own delivery against Procurement performance targets within the role’s remit; establish dashboards and lead reviews to ensure target achievement.
  • Deliver cash flow improvement by optimizing payment term to suppliers.
  • Identify opportunities to advance digital and functional capabilities in category strategies, supplier performance management, and risk mitigation to drive speed, precision, and innovation.
  • Support J&J One Procurement strategy and execute joint collaborative initiatives.
