Sr. Mechanical Reliability Engineer

CF&I Steel, L.P.•Pueblo, CO

About The Position

At CF&I Steel, L.P., the Sr. Mechanical Reliability Engineer monitors, analyzes, and improves asset health across mechanical systems and process performance to support safe, stable, and efficient plant operations. Reporting to the Reliability Manager and working under limited supervision, the role identifies and eliminates reliability risks through equipment reliability engineering and process optimization. It links mechanical condition, process variability, and failure modes to drive proactive interventions, improve asset availability, reduce unplanned downtime, and optimize lifecycle performance. The role works closely with Maintenance, Operations, and Engineering to advance defect elimination, risk mitigation, and asset health strategies. The company states that maintaining and promoting a safe, healthy, and injury-free environment is required for all jobs. The position leads mechanical reliability improvement, condition monitoring, preventive and predictive maintenance, process reliability, and lifecycle asset management initiatives. It also provides reliability engineering input to capital projects and equipment design, and uses data analysis and reliability modeling to guide continuous improvement and investment priorities.

Requirements

  • Bachelor’s degree in Mechanical or Industrial Engineering.
  • At least 7 years of experience in reliability, maintenance, or process engineering in an industrial environment.
  • CMRP certification, or obtain it within the first year of employment.
  • RCM (Reliability Centered Maintenance) training.
  • Experience implementing advanced condition-based monitoring programs.
  • Experience improving process stability to enhance equipment reliability.
  • Lean / Six Sigma Green Belt or higher, or obtain it within the first year of employment.
  • Strong understanding of RCM, FMEA/FMECA, RCFA, predictive maintenance technologies, integrated equipment and process asset-health monitoring, and the impact of process variability and control on equipment life.
  • Proficiency in reliability modeling, including Weibull analysis and fault tree analysis, SPC, and data-driven problem solving.
  • Proficiency in CMMS/EAM systems, MS Office, MS Project, and Minitab.
  • Ability to read and interpret mechanical, hydraulic, and process documentation.
  • Strong collaboration between Maintenance and Operations; ability to influence operating practices and protect asset health.
  • System-thinking approach focused on end-to-end asset performance; self-directed and able to manage multiple priorities.
  • Must be eligible to work in the USA.

Nice To Haves

  • Experience in steel or similar process-based manufacturing environments.
  • Demonstrated experience linking equipment performance with process conditions.

Responsibilities

  • Continuously assess mechanical asset health using condition-monitoring data and process indicators; correlate equipment condition with process variables and develop strategies to improve asset stability and operating-envelope control.
  • Lead reliability improvement and defect-elimination efforts for mechanical systems, identify and resolve chronic failures, and facilitate Root Cause Failure Analysis that accounts for mechanical and process-related contributors.
  • Develop and optimize preventive and predictive maintenance strategies using RCM and FMEA principles, aligning maintenance activities with asset health, criticality, and failure modes.
  • Develop and advance condition-monitoring and diagnostic programs, including vibration, oil analysis, thermography, ultrasonics, and NDT; interpret findings, diagnose failure modes, drive corrective actions, and deploy AI-driven technologies to monitor critical asset health and optimize Remaining Useful Life.
  • Partner with Operations to identify process-driven reliability risks and define and optimize operating windows that protect equipment and improve reliability.
  • Provide reliability engineering expertise for capital projects and equipment design, embedding reliability, maintainability, and lifecycle cost effectiveness in installations and modifications.
  • Use KPIs and statistical tools, including MTBF, MTTR, Weibull analysis, and SPC, to identify trends and failure patterns and turn data into actionable reliability improvements.
  • Support mechanical-system risk and asset strategy by contributing to criticality assessments and lifecycle asset management strategies, and prioritizing maintenance and capital investments based on risk, asset condition, and business impact.
