This role specializes in designing and improving mechanical systems, components, and products. The Sr. Mechanical Engineer leads projects and teams, and often works on complex, high-impact projects. They act as a resource for new or lower level engineers. The individual will support the Target Fabrication Group in engineering tasks that are specific to the manufacture of targets for the OMEGA Laser Facilities. These include all phases of producing fixtures and components for assembling targets: design, generation of drawings, and overseeing manufacture/procurement. They will also be responsible for the design and testing of equipment to support target R&D activities – specifically: vacuum, vapor deposition, and cryogenic systems. The role requires the ability to perform Finite Element Analysis of structures designed (Structural and thermal).

Requirements

  • Bachelor's degree in Mechanical Engineering and 5 years of relevant experience required
  • Or equivalent combination of education and experience
  • Proficient with CAD software required
  • Competent with Finite element analysis (FEA) software required
  • Ability to work both independently and as a part of a multidisciplinary team required

Nice To Haves

  • Siemens NX software preferred
  • Experience with thermal analysis and the design of equipment for operating at temperatures other than room temperature preferred

Responsibilities

  • Develops conceptual and detailed designs of mechanical parts and assemblies based on project requirements.
  • Prepares technical drawings in compliance with industry standards.
  • Provides supporting safety and engineering analyses as required.
  • Prepares materials for engineering design reviews.
  • Supports the Target Fabrication Group in engineering tasks specific to the manufacture of targets for the OMEGA Laser Facilities.
  • Oversees manufacture/procurement of fixtures and components for assembling targets.
  • Designs and tests equipment to support target R&D activities, specifically vacuum, vapor deposition, and cryogenic systems.
  • Performs Finite Element Analysis of designed structures (structural and thermal).
