About The Position

Leo is Amazon’s low Earth orbit satellite broadband network. Its mission is to deliver fast, reliable internet to customers and communities around the world, and we’ve designed the system with the capacity, flexibility, and performance to serve a wide range of customers, from individual households to schools, hospitals, businesses, government agencies, and other organizations operating in locations without reliable connectivity. The Sr. Mechanical Design Engineer will be a member of the Amazon Leo Inter-Satellite Link team, focusing on the design of the various mechanical ground support equipment (GSE), including assembly, alignment, and testing fixturing and tooling. The ideal candidate has extensive experience in performing design, analysis, sizing, and selection of mechanical mechanisms and components for development and production environments. This is a hands-on role for a highly collaborative individual that combines superb technical analytical, and documentation capabilities to convert analytic trade studies to a qualified physical design, while optimizing to support high volume production and meeting cross discipline requirements. Export Control Requirement: Due to applicable export control laws and regulations, candidates must be a U.S. citizen or national, U.S. permanent resident (i.e., current Green Card holder), or lawfully admitted into the U.S. as a refugee or granted asylum.

  • Experience with prototyping and implementation
  • Experience in DFM/DFA and manufacturing process development. Applying knowledge of product design, fabrication, assembly, tooling, and materials
  • U.S. citizen or national, U.S. permanent resident (i.e., current Green Card holder), or lawfully admitted into the U.S. as a refugee or granted asylum.

Nice To Haves

  • Experience with CAD design in NX, TeamCenter
  • Experience with production fixturing and tooling design
  • Experience in the design of complex mechanical products and equipment at volume
  • Knowledge of Ansys Finite Element analysis tool
  • 5+ years of experience with development, test, deployment of aerospace systems

  • Strong time and task management skills with consistent attention to detail
  • Use of engineering project management software such as JIRA, Confluence, or other Agile tools
  • Strong communication, documentation and writing skills

Responsibilities

  • Lead a variety of tasks and development projects, using knowledge and experience in understanding, collaborating and trading complex inputs from multiple other disciplines (Electrical, Optics, Process, Thermal, Dynamics, Mechanisms, Materials, Manufacturing, Assembly, and Test), to guide the team and arrive at a viable technical approach for both prototype and production level designs.
  • Generate detailed 3D CAD assemblies/components and drawings as deliverables, specifically assembly, alignment and test GSE for satellite systems, using Siemens NX.
  • Coordinate with other engineers, manufacturing and program management to ensure design intent and cost effectiveness of production are achieved.
  • Develop documentation and presentation of materials for technical design reviews.
  • Design and support test campaigns, both development and qualification/acceptance, for space and GSE hardware.
  • Tasks would vary between fixturing and tooling design, design reviews, building and qualifying.
