About The Position

AWS Infrastructure Services is responsible for the design, planning, delivery, and operation of all AWS global infrastructure, ensuring customers have continual access to the innovation they rely on. This role involves working on challenging problems within a diverse team of engineers and specialists. The position offers an opportunity to merge expertise in HVAC and plumbing design with next-generation data center design, influencing construction on a global scale. The Mechanical Design Engineer will influence all aspects of Mechanical design, construction, operations, and maintenance for global data centers, including fire suppression, detection, alarm, and mass notification systems, as well as fire-resistant construction and life safety. The role requires defining, designing, detailing, and documenting Mechanical features using prescriptive and performance-based approaches, ensuring the protection of people and customer data. Contribution to the continual improvement of Mechanical design standards is expected. Primary responsibilities include performing and overseeing project-related work such as water supply analysis and design for fire water service, coordinating Mechanical system space requirements, and preparing detailed designs for HVAC, plumbing, and hydronic systems. The role also involves reviewing all design disciplines for code compliance and overseeing or performing this work as needed. The subject matter expert will ensure contractors have the necessary information for construction and that operations teams are equipped for maintenance. Collaboration with internal and external stakeholders, including design, construction, commissioning, operations, vendors, service providers, and local officials, is integral to this global team's mission.

Requirements

  • 6+ years of data center design, construction, operations, or facility maintenance experience
  • 6+ years of industrial or commercial engineering in mission critical facilities including but not limited to: data centers, power generation or oil and gas facilities experience
  • Bachelor's degree in Engineering or a related field
  • Knowledge of critical data center mechanical and electrical equipment
  • Experience in data center design, construction, operations, or facility maintenance
  • Experience in industrial or commercial engineering in mission critical facilities including but not limited to: data centers, power generation or oil and gas facilities
  • Experience researching new designs, technologies, and construction methods of data center equipment and facilities

Nice To Haves

  • Professional Engineering or Architectural License
  • Knowledge of building codes and regulations for your region
  • Experience carrying design concepts through exploration, development, and into deployment or mass production
  • Experience reading, interpreting, and creating construction drawings, specifications, and submittal documents

Responsibilities

  • Driving improvement of design standards and project approaches across the organization.
  • Work with internal and external design teams to review designs in progress to ensure they meet established design standards, local code requirements, and any other requirements of the Authorities Having Jurisdiction (AHJs).
  • Be responsible for providing high quality Mechanical engineering advice on a wide variety of projects globally while working with local engineering teams to achieve alignment of designs and design objectives.
  • Coordinating with construction, commissioning, and risk management teams to answer requests for information and value engineering queries.
  • Be responsible for construction documents, code compliance, design and installation standards, water supply evaluation and assessment, testing, inspections, and submittal review.
  • Perform and oversee project-related work, such as water supply analysis and design for fire water service to buildings, including coordination with utilities and fire officials to establish basic site infrastructure requirements.
  • Coordinate Mechanical system space requirements, supporting utilities, and equipment locations.
  • Provide detailed construction specifications for all Mechanical-related trades.
  • Prepare detailed designs for HVAC, plumbing, and hydronic systems.
  • Review all design disciplines to ensure they meet the code requirements described in our design standards.
  • Oversee and review work performed by others, and in some cases, perform the work yourself.
  • Ensure that contractors have the information they need to build our data centers the way we expect them to.
  • Ensure that our operations teams are well equipped to operate and maintain them as needed to meet our goals.
  • Work with internal and external stakeholders, including design, construction, commissioning, operations, vendors, and other service providers, as well as local building and fire officials.
