Sr. Manufacturing Engineer – Lunar – A Shift – Pumps

BLUE ORIGIN•Seattle, WA
•$134,434 - $188,207•Onsite

About The Position

Blue Origin is seeking an experienced Manufacturing Engineer to join its Pumps Manufacturing Engineering team. The role leads development and optimization of manufacturing processes for internally fabricated pumps critical to lunar missions and space exploration systems. It bridges design engineering and production operations by translating pump design requirements into robust, repeatable manufacturing processes and providing ongoing technical support to production teams. The engineer drives design-for-manufacturability initiatives, develops manufacturing documentation, and ensures production readiness for complex pump assemblies used in lunar vehicles. The team enables production of critical fluid-handling systems for lunar operations and space exploration. Pumps support reliable fluid management for crew safety and mission success. The role works across pump design and manufacturing to ensure complex hydraulic and pneumatic systems can be produced reliably and cost-effectively, with the opportunity to develop subject-matter expertise in pump manufacturing. This position is part of Blue Origin Operations, which includes Integrated Supply Chain, Test Operations, Safety, Quality, and Mission Assurance, and provides manufacturing and supply-chain support across Blue Origin facilities. The position is based in Seattle, Washington, on A shift, Monday through Friday, 7:00 a.m.–3:30 p.m. Relocation is available, and travel may be up to 10% for training and other support activities.

Requirements

  • Bachelor of Science in Mechanical, Manufacturing, Electrical, or Aerospace Engineering from an accredited university.
  • At least 8 years of experience in manufacturing or process engineering, preferably with rotating equipment or fluid systems.
  • At least 5 years of experience creating detailed work instructions and manufacturing documentation.
  • Experience with precision manufacturing processes, including machining, assembly, and testing.
  • Must be a U.S. citizen or national, U.S. permanent resident with a current Green Card, or lawfully admitted into the U.S. as a refugee or granted asylum.
  • Must be able to work second shift, have flexibility to move shifts as needed, and be open to extended hours if required.

Nice To Haves

  • Manufacturing engineering experience with pumps, fluid systems, or rotating equipment in aerospace or other high-reliability industries.
  • Hands-on experience with pump assembly, testing, and validation processes.
  • Knowledge of pump design principles, fluid dynamics, and performance testing requirements.
  • Experience with Environmental Control and Life Support Systems (ECLSS) or similar critical fluid systems.
  • Understanding of precision manufacturing requirements for pump components, including tolerances, surface finishes, and material compatibility.
  • Experience in New Product Introduction (NPI) and production transition for complex mechanical systems.
  • Proficiency with PLM/MRP systems such as Teamcenter or Windchill and with manufacturing execution systems.
  • Knowledge of Lean manufacturing practices and continuous improvement methodologies.
  • Experience with advanced manufacturing technologies such as CNC machining, additive manufacturing, and automated assembly.
  • Familiarity with pump testing equipment and validation procedures.
  • Strong foundation in GD&T, manufacturing process development, and quality control systems.
  • Experience supporting design reviews and manufacturing readiness assessments.
  • Lean Six Sigma certification or equivalent process improvement training.
  • Master's degree in a relevant engineering field.
  • Project management experience with cross-functional manufacturing teams.

Responsibilities

  • Lead industrialization of pump designs from development through production readiness, creating processes for pump components, assemblies, and testing procedures.
  • Develop detailed work instructions, process flows, tooling specifications, and inspection plans for pump fabrication and assembly.
  • Collaborate with design engineering to optimize pump designs for manufacturing feasibility, cost, and quality during PDR, CDR, and PRR design reviews.
  • Provide technical troubleshooting and process optimization support to production teams, including root cause analysis and corrective-action implementation.
  • Design and specify manufacturing tooling, fixtures, and assembly equipment for pump production.
  • Conduct process FMEAs, risk assessments, and validation activities for new pump manufacturing lines and equipment.
  • Identify and implement opportunities for cost reduction, efficiency gains, and quality improvements in pump manufacturing.
  • Evaluate and deploy manufacturing technologies such as precision machining, additive manufacturing, and automated assembly for pump production.
  • Ensure pump manufacturing processes meet AS9100 aerospace quality standards and Blue Origin requirements.
  • Work with design engineering, quality, supply chain, and production teams to support production schedules and resolve manufacturing challenges.
