AvalaraUNAVAILABLE, UNAVAILABLE

About The Position

The Senior Consultant serves as the premier subject matter expert and technical mentor for the License Managed Services team. This role owns end-to-end delivery for Avalara's largest and most complex enterprise customers, while actively building the technical capability of the team around them. Acting as a bar raiser, the Senior Consultant translates deep domain expertise into scalable frameworks, direct mentorship, and elevated departmental standards, ensuring the team grows in capability and accuracy. How This Role Elevates Avalara Raises the technical floor of the entire License Management Analyst cohort by converting complex jurisdictional knowledge into repeatable frameworks, reducing senior escalation dependency and enabling the team to handle greater complexity independently. Builds customer trust and retention for Avalara's most valuable accounts by ensuring consistent, expert-backed compliance delivery that eliminates errors and proactively surfaces risk before it reaches the client. Increases talent density by modeling high standards of ownership, accuracy, and accountability, creating a team culture of precision and domain expertise.

  • 7+ years of experience in business licensing, tax registration, or multi-jurisdictional regulatory compliance, or an equivalent combination of education and demonstrated expertise.
  • Extensive multi-jurisdictional knowledge of Business Licensing, Sales, Use, and Payroll tax registrations requirements across a broad range of U.S. states, with a proven track record of rapidly building jurisdiction-specific expertise.
  • Proven ability to coach and develop technical team members, translating complex domain expertise into clear, actionable learning for others.
  • Demonstrated history of high personal ownership and successful delivery for large-scale, high-complexity client engagements.
  • Consistent demonstration of Avalara's OPAH FOCUS success traits, acting as a cultural anchor and technical role model for the team.

Responsibilities

  • Own the technical execution of Avalara's most intricate enterprise customers, managing complex data queries, multi-state research, and high-risk registrations with full accountability for outcomes.
  • Serve as the designated technical authority for Analysts and Associate Analysts on difficult jurisdictional unblocking efforts, complex filing strategies, and escalation resolution.
  • Raise cross-functional technical standards by sharing deep tax and licensing knowledge through regular reviews, internal guides, and technical walkthroughs that materially improve the team's collective capability.
  • Act as the final technical reviewer for complex deliverables, ensuring the team's output meets the highest standards of accuracy and jurisdictional compliance before reaching the client.
  • Identify complex manual workflows and develop simplified, documented frameworks that enable less-experienced team members to execute advanced compliance tasks successfully and independently.
  • Developing and sharing specialized agentic workflows designed specifically to accelerate complex jurisdictional research and data management.
  • Coaching team members on how to effectively embed AI into their own workflows to improve research speed and data accuracy, raising the AI capability of the broader team.
  • Piloting and validating new AI-enabled compliance tools, providing domain-specific feedback that ensures technology effectively solves the team's most complex customer use cases.
  • Quantifying measurable impact such as time saved, reduction in manual research effort, improved accuracy rates, or enhanced risk detection on complex filings.
  • Applying responsible AI governance standards when influencing compliance interpretations or client-facing outcomes.
  • Raise the technical floor of the team by turning individual expertise into shared frameworks, documented processes, and repeatable playbooks that outlast any single engagement.
  • Establish a higher standard for accuracy and ownership that others on the team adopt and internalize, not because they are asked to, but because they see it modeled consistently.
  • Challenge existing ways of working by identifying gaps in team capability, proposing solutions, and driving adoption of better methods across the analyst cohort.
  • Make others better through direct mentorship, constructive technical feedback, and the kind of knowledge transfer that materially reduces senior escalation dependency over time.
