About The Position

This position is responsible for operating road trucks for the receiving, distribution and movement of waste/recycles/leachate to and from all locations that Bi-County services in a safe and sanitary manner. The role involves driving and operating various trucks, hauling materials, inspecting refuse for hazardous substances, performing routine maintenance, and assisting with general upkeep and cleaning. The operator must ensure vehicle safety, comply with DOT standards, and adhere to all safety regulations and policies. This position also requires responding to and assisting with clean-up efforts during special events, natural disasters, and storms as directed.

Requirements

  • Five (5) years of heavy equipment operation experience; or any equivalent combination of education, training, and experience that provides the requisite knowledge, skills, and abilities for this job.
  • High School diploma or equivalent.
  • Valid Driver’s License (No CDL needed).
  • Ability to perform detailed work accurately and independently in compliance with stringent time limits requiring minimal direction and supervision.
  • Ability to establish and maintain accurate records of assigned activities and operations.
  • Ability to communicate clearly and concisely, both orally and in writing.
  • Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with those contacted in the course of work.
  • Ability to work the allocated hours of the position.
  • Frequent exertion of up to 50 pounds of lifting/moving or force and occasional lift, move or drag 75 pounds or more.
  • Ability to stand, walk, sit; use hands to finger, handle or feel; reach with hands and arms; balance, stoop, kneel, crouch or crawl; and speak and hear.
  • Specific vision abilities required by this job include close, distance and peripheral vision; depth perception; and the ability to adjust focus.
  • Acceptable verbal and conversation skills to effectively communicate with others in English.
  • Ability to read and write English and interpret documents such as safety rules, material safety data sheets, operation and maintenance instructions, procedure manuals, and so forth.
  • Ability to recognize occupational hazards in work activities and take safety precautions.
  • Maintain mental capacity which allows the capability of making sound decisions and following directions.

Responsibilities

  • Driving and operating trucks (roll-offs, front loaders, tractor trucks pulling low-boy or tanker trailers).
  • Hauling leachate, recyclables, and trash.
  • Pickup, separate, or prepare recyclables for reuse.
  • Inspects refuse for the elimination of hazardous material from entering the landfill.
  • Responsible for safety of their vehicle to comply with DOT standards.
  • Performs routine preventive maintenance and light repairs on equipment such as changing oil, tires, lubricating, fueling etc.
  • Assists in the upkeep and cleaning of equipment, shop area, break room, offices, floors, and restrooms.
  • Repairs, cleans and paints collection containers; delivers containers; cleans areas around collection containers.
  • Performs daily pre and post-operational vehicle inspections.
  • Reports necessary maintenance or repair of equipment to the Superintendent or Team Leader.
  • Responds to and assists with clean-up efforts after special events, natural disasters, and storms as directed.
  • Performs other general maintenance and clean up duties as needed.
  • Inspects equipment daily for safety and maintenance.
  • Ensures all work is done according to standard practices, design specifications, and County and local building codes.
  • Ensures all activities are carried out in a safe manner; adheres to all County safety regulations; ensures all regulations pertaining to the safe use of equipment are understood and followed.
  • Reports all accidents to the appropriate authority.
  • Follows all policies for reporting.
  • Represents the Department and County to other County staff and members of the public.
  • Provides quality customer service to individuals needing directions or assistance.
